The rivalry between Michael Phelps (USA) and Chad Le Clos (South Africa) is well known, stemming from but not limited to Le Clos' victory in the 200m Butterfly at the 2012 London Olympic Games. In that even, Phelps was surprised with his first butterfly lost in more than a decade.
At the Rio 2016 Olympics the two were often brought into proximity, including the famous pictures of Michael Phelps giving Chad Le Clos the "death stare" shortly before beating him in the 200m Butterfly event.
Now Michael Phelps says he was not even aware of Le Clos' presence, that apparently Le Clos meant no more to him than a bug on a wall... believe that? Phelps stated on USA's NBC Today Show: "I just had music going on in my head. I had thoughts going on in my head, spitting water a little bit all over the place, so I was in my own zone..." he continued "I was not intentionally mean mugging him or giving him a dirty look."
Sure, right Michael...
Whatever was happening between the two, the pictures are great, aren't they?
Both swimmers have provided great sport over time and we wish them well...
