The 10 Best Movie Musicals Ever Made

From: The blot
“Chicago”
2002
An ahead-of-its-time Broadway show finally clicked with the ’90s revival, when everyone was more familiar with the horrors of celebrity justice and ready to embrace a mordant satire of that phenomenon. With its Fosse-esque edits, the movie made it work in a whole new medium, a healthy dose of razzle dazzle spicing up the tale of convicted killers Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones battling for the spotlight. Social commentary has rarely been this entertaining.

5 Transgender Activists Who Blazed A Trail For The LGBT Community

From: NewNowNext
Christopher Lee

Lee was outspoken as a trans activist and filmmaker in his lifetime, but it was his tragic death that may have had the greatest impact.

The co-founder of San Francisco’s Transgender Film Festival and director of the autobiographical Christopher’s Chronicles, Lee committed suicide in 2012 at age 48.

Because Lee had not received an updated birth certificate, the coroner listed his gender as “female” on his death certificate. “It felt like spitting on his grave,” friend Chino Scott-Chung said. “When they put RIP on people’s tombstones it’s rest in peace. And I just felt like Christopher’s spirit will not rest in peace with a death certificate that says female.”

As a result, Scott-Chung went to California Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, who introduced the Respect After Death Act. The bill, which would establish directives to help file out death certificates for transgender people, is currently working its way through the Legislature.

A person should rest in peace after death as the same person they were during life,” Atkins said in a statement. “This bill is designed to ensure that the wishes of a transgender person regarding their gender identity are respected after they have passed on.

INSTAGRAM GOES NUTS OVER ONE DIRECTION’S HARRY STYLES WATCHING TV NAKED

From: The Gaily Grind
One Direction front man Harry Styles, sent Instagram into a frenzy after his Cousin Matt Selley, posted a seemingly revealing photo of him on the online photo sharing service.

At first glance, it appears Styles is wearing nothing but a purple beanie hat in the pic captioned: “Just watched the boxing we recorded! Happy he won!

But some have pointed out he may be wearing black underwear, conveniently covered up by his hand.

What do you think?
There was also this photo someone tweeted of Styles apparently peeing into a bush with his pants all the way down in October:

5 Trailblazing LGBT Athletes Who Changed The Game

From: NewNowNext
Matthew Mitcham
Diving

At the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, the formidable Chinese men’s diving team was expected to make a clean sweep. Then came the 10-meter platform competition and 20-year-old Matthew Mitcham from the underdog Australian team pulled out a near perfect final dive—the highest single-dive score in Olympic history—to capture the gold for the Aussies. After receiving his score and learning he’d won the gold, Mitcham leapt into the stands to hug and kiss his boyfriend.

Mitcham had come out publicly less than six months prior, and was one of only ten out gay Olympians at the 2008 Summer Olympics. His victory in the 10-mete dive was easily the highest profile win ever by an out gay man in an Olympic event.

It was a powerful human interest story and yet, even though that kiss with his partner was captured by live video feed, NBC opted not to show it or even Mitcham’s medal ceremony in their evening Olympics telecast. But the impact was not lost on the LGBT community: After his historic performance, Mitcham was inundated with letters from gay teens inspired by his athleticism and openness, an experience the gold medal winner described as “extremely humbling.”

Straight Man Testifies He Was Forced To Receive Fellatio From Gay Man, Jury Not Convinced

From: Queerty
It all started with an innocent car ride after a wild night on the town. Man #1 offered to drive Man #2 home, and the next thing Man #2 knew… His erect penis was in the mouth of Man #1! …For five minutes! And the whole thing was, of course, completely non-consensual.

The sexual offense took place in Christchurch, New Zealand in the wee hours of May 19, 2012 and the identities of the two men have not yet been made public. During the two-day trial earlier this week, Man #2, who identifies as heterosexual, told the jury he woke up after passing out in the back seat of the car to find Man #1 performing unwanted fellatio on him, Christchurch Court News reports.

Man #1 denied charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, claiming Man #2 had requested oral sex, but suddenly changed his mind five minutes into it.

But Man #2 insisted he is not gay. To prove this, he brought his girlfriend to court with him, who sat quietly in the back of the room while he gave testimony.

The jury heard evidence that Man #2 had a history of experiencing memory blackouts when he drank heavily. On the night of the offense, he had consumed 12 to 14 alcoholic beverages on a party bus between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight. He then met Man #1, who offered to give him a ride home after he was denied entry into a casino.

During his testimony, Man #2 claimed that in addition to not remembering giving consent for the blowjob, he also had no recollection of sending two text messages that appeared on his phone around the time of the “unwanted” sex act, as well as no memory of smoking pot which showed up in his system in toxicology tests taken the next day.

Tony Greig, the lawyer representing Man #1, told the jury that alcohol often makes people do things they later regret, like making “tactless” comments… or accepting BJs from a strangers in the backseats of cars.

Expert witness Dr. Erik Monasterio said it appeared to him that Man #2 had experienced “alcohol-induced amnesia.” He testified that in his professional estimation, Man #2 could have asked for oral sex during a memory blackout, fallen asleep while it was happening, and then woken up five minutes later with no memory of making the request.

The jury deliberated for 45 minutes. They ruled that Man #2, indeed, could have given consent for the blowjob while suffering a drunken blackout, thus letting Man #1 off the hook.

Upon hearing the not guilty verdict, Man #1 offered the jury a polite “Thank you.”

Brian Sims: ‘We’ll Have A Gay President In 10 Years’

From: The New Civil Rights Movement
Brian Sims says America will have a gay president in a decade. Pennsylvania’s first openly-gay elected representative made the comments in an interview with the French LGBT magazine Tétu, which asked him how he feels about being labeled as a gay politician.

It doesn't bother me that people label me as the ‘gay elected representative of Pennsylvania,” Sims said. “In 50 years, it won’t be an issue anymore. Looking at the current trend in the American opinion, we’ll have a gay president in 10 years.

Sims, who has become a national figure despite being a state representative, also had a few words to share about our current president.

Barack Obama is probably one of the top 10 pro-LGBT activists in America. No other president has done more than he has. Did he always do it the way we wanted? No, but he’s done more than all the other presidents put together. He’s changed mentalities, particularly within the African-American community.

And Sims offered some thoughts about how he interacts with those who oppose “a proud, gay, feminist.”

“I respect my opponents because they fight for what they believe in. You need to know how to disagree with someone without being rude: It’s a cliche’ that they keep repeating over and over at school, but this concept has helped me more at the PA General Assembly than anything else I’ve learned as a lawyer or an activist.

June 5 is the First National Long Term HIV Survivors Day

From: EDGE
Tez Anderson wants long-term survivors to begin looking to the future
 (Source:Courtesy Tez Anderson)
In 1983, while he was still in his 20s, Tez Anderson found out that he was HIV-positive. Although doctors told him he only had two years to live, somewhere along the way he turned 50. Faced with the prospect of a future he hadn't planned for, Anderson fell into a deep depression. When he finally realized that he wasn't the only one dealing with "AIDS Survivor Syndrome," he started Long Term HIV Survivors Day, the first of which will be held on June 5.

"What I hear most is that I’m not the only one," said Anderson. "I thought I was going crazy, and was ashamed of it. But once I began talking about my experience, I realized I was on to something."

Anderson’s downward spiral came with depression, insomnia and a lot of anger. He was online planning out his suicide when he discovered that his symptoms were a lot like PTSD. He called it AIDS Survivor Syndrome (ASS), and soon, many other long-term survivors began sharing similar stories.

"Part of my breakdown was that I was such an asshole about it, I had alienated all of my friends," said Anderson. He called up a few that he had worked with in ACT Up years before, and they helped him throw a Town Hall event in San Francisco last September.

"I invited those we knew to talk about their experiences," said Anderson, "and 200 people showed up. It was like they were at a revival! There were a lot of people who were HIV-positive, but also many who were HIV-negative, who were dealing with the trauma of losing all of our friends and lovers for two decades. The first 20 years of AIDS were devastating to our community, and you didn’t have to be positive to experience that loss and repeated grief."

Anderson kept throwing events, including a public poll, programming, a social, meditation, weekend retreats and four more Town Hall events. He witnessed people like him, transformed by the knowledge that they weren't alone in this.

"A large percentage of my cohorts were very isolated, very much angry, and then quiet. They became recluses," said Anderson. "Some of these people were scared to come to the big events, so they came to our Saturday morning coffee, where there are only about a dozen people. They might not say anything at first, but soon, they are ready to come to a Town Hall, and then to volunteer, and then to come out of their shell. A substantial number of people participated, and experienced a lessening of their symptoms."

Anderson created a website for the event and last month, filed paperwork to make the organization a non-profit. And now, he is calling for others across the country to come together and plan their own Long-Term survivors day, under the theme of "We’re Still Here."

"I encourage people to do what’s appropriate for their community," said Anderson. "The first-ever national Long Term Survivors Day is planned for June 5, because this was the date in 1981 that the Morbidity and Mortality report was released that first noted HIV. We chose that day as the day that AIDS awareness began."

Colorado Bakery - No Wedding Cakes for Anyone If We Have to Serve Gays

"The owner of a bakery in Lakewood, Colorado (who also happens to be an anti-LGBT Christian, of course) says he will stop baking wedding cakes altogether after the Colorado Civil Rights Commission ruled he could not refuse to bake one for a gay couple.

Phillips said he doesn't believe in gay marriage and he refused to sell them a cake. "We would close down the bakery before we would complicate our beliefs," Phillips said after the hearing. Phillips also admitted he had refused service to other same-sex couples.

A judge previously ruled a business owner cannot refuse service to a customer on the basis of sexual orientation.

Phillips appealed to the commission, but it upheld the decision.

That prompted Phillips to decide he would no longer make any wedding cakes. He said he would be fine selling cupcakes for a birthday party for someone who is gay but added, "I don't want to participate in a same-sex wedding." Full story here!

The Paul Lynde Show

ABC

September 13, 1972 – September 8, 1973
Starring
Paul Lynde
Elizabeth Allen
Jane Actman
The Paul Lynde Show is an American sitcom that aired on ABC. The series stars Paul Lynde and aired from September 13, 1972 to September 8, 1973.

The series starred Lynde as Paul Simms, a general practice attorney and the father of a family that consisted of his wife Martha (Elizabeth Allen) and daughters Barbara (Jane Actman) and Sally (Pamelyn Ferdin).

It also starred John Calvin as Barbara's husband, Howie Dickerson, an eccentric university student who was of genius intelligence (IQ 185) and was a whiz with everything and full of advice, but, inexplicably, he could not manage to hold down a job, and Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara as Howie's parents, Barney and Grace Dickerson. Howie's misadventures around the house and his lack of steady employment would drive his father in-law to distraction and would get him in a slow burn anger.

Critics perceived the show as derivative of All in the Family, then television's most-popular primetime program. For his role in the series, Lynde was nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe.

Baptist Pastor Chooses His Gay Son Over Anti-Gay Southern Baptist Convention

"A California church has decided to part ways with the Southern Baptist Convention’s official position on homosexuality after a pastor informed members of his congregation that his son was gay and he changed his views on homosexuality.

New Heart Community Church’s pastor Danny Cortez, wrote a letter to Christianity with Humanity blogger John Shore last week explaining how a conversation about Macklemore’s LGBT-rights anthem “Same Love” had inspired his son to come out to him last fall.

Months earlier, shore had told his son he had changed his views on homosexuality.

I couldn't help but think that my 15 year journey was in preparation for that moment,” Shore wrote. “If it wasn't for this 15 year journey and my change in theology, I may have destroyed my son through reparative therapy.Full story here via the Gaily Grind!

 Brody Jenner
From: Favorite Hunks & Other Things
Sam Brody Jenner (born August 21, 1983) is an American television personality, model and actor . The son of the 1976 Summer Olympics decathlon champion Bruce Jenner and actress Linda Thompson, he was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. In 2005, Jenner appeared in the reality television series The Princes of Malibu, which additionally featured his eldest brother Brandon Jenner and his friend Spencer Pratt.

In 2007, he began dating Lauren Conrad, a primary cast member of The Hills, and subsequently came to prominence after being cast in the series during the second season. Their brief relationship ultimately ended his friendship with Pratt. The following year, Jenner was commissioned his own spin-off series Bromance, in which he was intended to find another companion in Pratt's absence. However, it was cancelled after its inaugural season after receiving underwhelming ratings.

In 2009, Conrad left The Hills to pursue other career opportunities, and was replaced by Jenner's ex-girlfriend Kristin Cavallari. Their rekindled relationship became the central focus of the series until its conclusion the following year. In 2013, Jenner returned to reality television after being cast in Keeping Up with the Kardashians during the eighth season, which features his father Bruce; his stepmother Kris Jenner; his step-siblings Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Rob Kardashian; and his half-sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner.
