Six Classic Works Of Gay Literature Everyone Should Read In The New Year

From: Queerty
Invisible Life
by
E. Lynn Harris

E. Lynn Harris initially self-published this debut novel in 1991. In 1994, it was re-issued by Doubleday, received critical acclaim and launched Harris’ prolific, albeit tragically short-lived, career. The story revolves around Raymond Winston Tyler Jr., a young bisexual black man, as he embarks on a journey of sexual discovery and quickly finds himself torn between a woman and a married male lover.

G.I. Joe and Ken

From: Boomer Beefcake and Bonding
Introduced in 1964 to get boys used to the idea of fighting in Vietnam when they grew up, G.I. Joe is the bestselling boys' doll of all time (though he is marketed as a "movable fighting man").

He was cute, and since he was movable, you could have fun adventures with him, like have the bad guys force him and a buddy to kiss.
Unfortunately, when you took his clothes off, you got this:
Barbie's "boyfriend" Ken, introduced in 1961, was more fun.  He came wearing a swimsuit, with a natural-looking body that got more buff as time passed
Unfortunately, no letter to Santa Claus or picture circled in a toy catalog ever produced a Ken doll.  Your sister or the girl down the block certainly had one, but she always wanted to play "Barbie and Ken at the prom."

If you were very lucky, she might let you play "Ken goes to the beach with his 'buddy' Allan while Barbie is out of town."  Note that the term "buddy" is in quotes on the box.

“Homeless,” Pantsless Millionaire Pulls Prank On Pedestrians

From: Queerty
All those age-old adages like “appearances can be deceiving” and “you can’t judge a book by its cover” get a workout in a new video that features a seemingly homeless man clad only in a dirty bathrobe asking strangers on the sidewalk to loan their cellphones so he can make a quick call. Imagine their surprise when the person he calls is the fancy white-gloved chauffeur of his sleek black Rolls Royce and the homeless dude drops his robe to reveal his sexy thong-clad booty. It’s all in the spirit of human kindness.

Watch the good deeds unfold below.

Childhood Crush #1: Chasing the Boy with the Guitar

From:Tales of West Hollywood
 One of my earliest memories:

It's a warm night in the springtime.  We're  living on Randolph Street in Garrett, Indiana, so I must be about four years old.  My bedroom window looks out on the alley and then the back yard of the house in the next block, where there's a little grey-stone patio.

It's late, long after bedtime, but I'm still awake.  I go to the window.  Across the alley, some teenagers are sitting in green-striped lawn chairs on the patio, in kind of a circle, listening to a boy play the guitar and sing.

Mrs. Brown, you've got a lovely daughter.

Girls as sharp as her are something rare.

He is facing my direction.  Maybe he is singing to me!

I know I'm not anybody's daughter, but he said "lovely."  That means he loves me!

I push against the wire screen.  It must be broken -- it comes off easily.  I push myself out of the window, and land on the hard, warm grass.  The teenage boy keeps singing, looking in my direction.

Our house on Randolph Street
Walkin' about, even in a crowd, well

You'll pick her out, makes a bloke feel so proud

He's seen me walking around!

I walk across the back yard.  My new boyfriend is cute!   He is wearing a pale orange shirt and short pants, and sandals.

Don't let on, don't say she's broke my heart

I'd go down on my knees but it's no good to pine

Next comes the alley, all gravel, hard and sharp against my bare feet.  But I'm willing to endure it to let him know that it's OK, I won't break his heart again. .

Then suddenly the music stops.  The teenagers are all staring at me.  I hear murmuring "Look, it's a kid!" "Where'd he come from?"  "Is he lost?"

They are interrogating me, accusing me.  Scared, embarrassed, I start to cry.

Herman's Hermits

A teenage girl wearing sandals crosses the alley and sweeps me into her arms.  My boyfriend follows her. I get a glimpse of his smooth tanned chest, smell his Aqua Velva cologne.  They take me around to the front of the house, knock on the door, and deliver me to my parents, who yell a lot.

The screen in the window is fixed the next day.

I don't remember ever seeing my "boyfriend" again.

I've always thought of  "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" as a gay song, though I can't really find any gay subtexts in it, and Herman's Hermits is my least favorite boy band.

Toto

Toto had a daunting task following up their mammoth album Toto IV, which was one of the greatest soft rock classics of all time. Unfortunately, their followup Isolation was a bust, barely reaching gold and peaking at #42, and the underrated first single “Stranger In Town” peaked at #30 in December 1984.

All About Eve

George Henry Sanders (3 July 1906 – 25 April 1972) was an English film and television actor, singer-songwriter, music composer, and author. His career as an actor spanned more than 40 years. His upper-class English accent and bass voice often led him to be cast as sophisticated but villainous characters. He is perhaps best known as Jack Favell in Rebecca (1940), Scott Folliott in Foreign Correspondent (1940), Addison DeWitt in All About Eve (1950), King Richard the Lionheart in King Richard and the Crusaders (1954), Mr. Freeze in a two-parter episode of Batman (1966), the voice of the malevolent man-hating tiger Shere Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book (1967), and as Simon Templar, "The Saint", in five films made in the 1930s and 1940s.

Once In A Life Time:

 Seth Sorenson by Steve Jerome
From: Favorite hunks & Other Things
'Without a doubt, Seth is one of the most beautiful men I have had the pleasure to photograph.'

Under my 'welcome' on the right side of the blog, I write that FH is not just focused on the current, but favorites from years gone by. I think San Diego photographer Steve Jerome is a great example of why only focusing only the here and now would mean missing out on so many incredible images of the male form. Yes, Steve is shooting some of today's hottest men, including Dakota Charles who introduced me to Steve's imagery last November, and Quinn Christopher Jaxon last month. But.. delving into the archives often unearths some of the most stunning of treasures.

I am sure some of you have seen the image to the left, not one of Steve's, but from photographer Keith Munyan. Many of you who collected Playgirl through the years might recognize the shot from a 2005 special issue of the magazine, Men At The Beach.  That man on the beach is Seth Sorenson, model that Steve had the pleasure of meeting and shooting when Seth had just started to step in front of the camera. Steve shot Seth just after he graced the cover of Men's Fitness, but just before he took off, for taking it all off, for Playgirl Magazine

'I thoroughly enjoyed his company and loved showing him my hometown of Chicago, enjoying some of the best pizza and Italian food the city has to offer. I recorded almost everything we did and later released a DVD called Seth Sorenson Unedited that was a hit with his fans. I still have copies and like to look back on what I did very early on in my career.'

'Seth came to our Chicago facility when he first started modeling his exceptional good looks and incredible body, but he has since been living and working in San Diego and has developed a large following of adoring fans (for good reason) from all around the world. He also started a successful sports and fitness website that offers advice on how to maintain a healthy, near perfect body.'

Seth has that 'it' factor that photographers, and lovers of images of the male form, saw right away. His incredible body is important of course, but I think it was that face, Seth's beautiful blue eyes and adorable grin, and maybe just a bit of an 'awe shucks', sweet, but not cocky attitude that drew so many fans his way. Seth, who also went under the name of Jeremy Markum, built up a large fan base in the 2000's for his modeling and video work. I am sure that Seth was a part of many our early experiences with the male nude after we started our Google searches for naked men after first getting on the net!

'Seth came to Chicago and spent an entire weekend with me shooting, so we played around with all sorts of images, poses and lighting (studio and natural). He was amazing, to say the least. He was willing to try everything and really opened up during the weekend shoot.'

' Young, gorgeous and built, he turned heads everywhere we went.  I remember going to a Tower Records and having him purchase a copy of the fitness magazine that featured him on the cover. The clerk looked up and said, "that's you, isn't it?" and the smile on his face was precious.'

That video Steve shot, Seth Sorenson Unedited, was Steve's first foray into video. Steve's first film,The Blue Velvet Video, a soft core video featuring an array of gorgeous men in the buff, won Steve a couple of awards. Thanks to Steve for sharing his early work with Seth, and you can check out more of Steve's images with Seth, and check out the many prints available, on Steve' site HERE:

'Seth is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime find and one stunning example of a man.'
