Page 1 Roundup (06/04/2017)

From: kenneth in the (212)
I'm heartbroken for Britain, which has been the target of three deadly terror attacks in as many months. Now that we know that neither pretending there isn't a problem nor calling all Muslims terrorists isn't fixing things, does anyone have any actual idea how we combat this deadly form of counterculture?
My gut tells me there really isn't anything we can do, other than try to stop attacks before they happen. And scarily, Trump doesn't believe in any of our intelligence agencies, opting for The Drudge Report as his major source of information.
I'd say it's just as unfair to criticize Trump for playing golf during a crisis as it was to criticize Obama for doing the same -- except it was the current golfer in chief who was constantly ripping into him. Furthermore, Obama never claimed to have a "secret plan to defeat ISIS" in 30 days that was "foolproof." (Is that still a secret????) Apparently all we can do is wait for this administration to end.

Partner of Gay Police Officer Killed in Paris ISIS Attack Marries Him Posthumously

From: Towleroad
Etienne Cardiles, the partner of Xavier Jugelé, the police officer slain in an ISIS attack on Champs-Élysées in Paris in April, has married him posthumously at a ceremony attended by President Francois Hollande, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, and the current Interior Minister, Gérard Collomb.

Prior to Tuesday’s ceremony, Cardiles and Jugelé were PAX’d which is a form of domestic partnership that existed before marriage was allowed.

Cardiles is a functionary (high civil servant) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Here’s part of his moving eulogy, given on April 25th.

Kabul Blast Kills at Least 80, Injures More Than 300: ‘Such Attacks Will Never End’

Ex-intelligence official Jawid Kohistani speaks to Al Jazeera about security in Afghanistan after the Kabul bombing
From: Towleroad
A powerful truck bomb blast on Wednesday killed at least 80 people and wounded more than 300 in Kabul, according to Afghan officials.

The explosion, one of the deadliest in the Afghan capital, came at the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It took place in one of Kabul's most secured areas: the diplomatic quarter, which is home to many foreign embassies and government offices.

Al Jazeera spoke to Jawid Kohistani,  a security analyst and former official at Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security , about the nature of the attack, the failures of the security forces in the country and what comes next.

Al Jazeera:  The bombing has been described as " one of the biggest" to have hit the Afghan capital. How did the attacker manage to cause such destruction in a high-level security area? Kohistani:  This is not the first time that insurgents in Afghanistan have managed to attack or hit areas that are under heavy security. This has happened in the past and continues to happen. Of course, it is one of the biggest failures of the security services in Afghanistan, but at the same time, the situation in Afghanistan is very murky as we don't know who is involved with which group or organisation.

There are many insurgent groups actively operating across the country and they have comprehensive knowledge about diplomatic or military areas. It is important to note that when attacks like this happen, there is always an insider linked with the attackers who helps plan an assault that can cause maximum damage.

Al Jazeera: The Taliban denied involvement in the attack, claiming they don't intend to harm civilians. Is this true, and if the Taliban did not do it, can ISIL conduct an attack of such calibre in Afghanistan? Kohistani: First of all, we don't know whether any of the statements by the Taliban or any other insurgent group in Afghanistan are true.  We don't have any evidence of who conducted the attack.

The Taliban immediately denied responsibility, maybe because the number of civilians killed in the attack is big and they don't want people to question their Islamic values and stance. They want to portray their fight as exclusively against the Afghan government and the foreign troops.
Speaking of ISIL, most of the suspected ISIL group members appear to be former Taliban or local militias that want to attract support or attention in the name of the group. They don't have enough capacity, resources or influence in the country to conduct such attacks, but they do claim it in a show of power.

Al Jazeera: What happens next and who is it to blame for the killing of innocent people? Do the government and security services bear any responsibility, or is just the armed groups? Kohistani:  There are simple things that must be fixed. There is no real strategy to identify fighters and arrest them.

The Afghan government seems to be failing citizens and the military and intelligence has long lacked strategic leadership and directives which is why it has become very easy for fighters to conduct such attacks and with that being said, innocent civilians will continue to die.

New Police Body Cam Videos Sheds Light On Pulse Nightclub Shooting

From: Orlando Sentinel
New Pulse Nightclub footage shows the response through police officers’ eyes — from initial confusion to shock as they began to understand the scope of the attack that killed 49 people in Orlando on June 12.

More than 30 videos offer the most complete picture of what happened during the three-hour standoff.

In the body camera video released this week by the city of Orlando, Belle Isle Police Officer Brandon Cornwell entered the club through a large broken window near the front door and took cover behind a bar as Orlando police officers yelled commands toward the bathroom where gunman Omar Mateen had cornered survivors.

At 2:17 a.m., an officer started to scream and a barrage of shots could be heard. Orlando Police Chief John Mina has said officers fired at Mateen but did not hit him. Mateen did not fire at officers at that point, he said.

A couple minutes later, an officer yelled: “You, in the bathroom, let me see your hands now. Come out with your hands up, or you will die.”

Cornwell said a prayer to himself.

“Lord Jesus, watch over me,” he said.

"I couldn’t see the guy,” he later told another officer in a conversation captured on his body camera. “He came out of the left bathroom and we were stacked up, and the guys that were up front just started shooting right at him. And he went back into the bathroom. As soon as he came out, I saw like a dark-colored shirt ... and about that time they started firing at him, but I couldn’t open up on him."

The 15 new hours of footage given to the Orlando Sentinel through a public records request initially made nearly a year ago was redacted, and none of the people who died that night are shown.

Body cameras in this latest release captured officers encouraging victims to crawl out of the club, racing to the scene, talking about the many victims inside and the need for bomb dogs, and just waiting outside for further instructions. Patrons were frisked as they were rescued.

Orlando Police Officer Graham Cage’s body cam captures the scene of another officer cautiously leading a victim out of one of the bathrooms and down a hallway.

“Hands up, both hands, put your hands up,” the officer says off-camera. “Follow the sound of my voice. Come this way. Show me your [expletive] hands! … I need you to crawl this way. … Follow my light.”

The Orange County Sheriff's Office released its own body cam footage from that night in November. Those two dozen videos showed officers clearing the entrance, one of the bathrooms, helping victims outside and pulling victims out of the building after it was breached by the Orlando Police Department.

In another video, chaos unfolded simultaneously in the bright white hallways of Orlando Regional Medical Center, after rumors of a second shooter at the hospital reached officers in the middle of the standoff. Footage from Orlando Police Officer Matthew Davis showed a team sweeping the hospital for a “bad guy.”

With a long gun drawn in front of him, Davis and other officers followed a trail of blood down the stairs to the basement and back up to the first floor, but they found nothing.

“Does anybody know where this blood is going?” someone asked.

A hospital worker told them a bleeding patient was taken to a room on the sixth floor and described the patient. They went upstairs to that room, but he wasn’t there.

Seconds later, they spotted a man down the hall who fit the description.

“You, here, down the hall,” one officer yells, as the man ducks into a room. “Hey, hey, hey, where are you at? Come here! Let me see your hands!”

Off-camera, the man cries out, “I’m shot.”

“I don’t care, [expletive] crawl to me right now,” the officer shouts back. “ … Crawl to me right now. [Expletive]. Crawl out! Crawl out! Crawl out now!”

Footage then shows the man splayed on the ground, cuffed, with a white sneaker on his right foot and a gunshot in his left foot.

It’s determined that he is a patient – and he is taken to the ER.

“We’ll obviously get him treated and everything,” Davis says. “But we’re gonna keep someone with him until we can figure out who he is.”

The report of a shooter at the hospital turned out to be unsubstantiated.

Belle Isle Police Officer Jon-Paul Gargano ran back to his car about 2:45 a.m. to get a roll of paper towels from the trunk.

He found a woman sitting on the sidewalk nearby.

“Y'all gonna [expletive] shoot his [expletive]?” she asked.

“We can't, ma'am,” he responded.

“What do you mean, you can't?”

“We can't; there’s more victims in there. We start to shoot, we might shoot other people,” Gargano said, running back to his post in front of the club.

“[Expletive] go in there and shoot his [expletive], man,” she called after him.

Ariana Grande: I'LL BE RETURNING TO THE INCREDIBLY BRAVE CITY OF MANCHESTER

From: Boy Culture
I worked with Ariana Grande (and met her brother Frankie) back in the day. I always liked her. I have a few friends who weren't fond of her professionally, and there are music fans who seem to view everything in life via a diva wars prism, but I must say I think whatever your opinion of Ariana as an artist, she has handled the tragedy of the Manchester bombing with heart and maturity.

Now, she is promising to return to Manchester to show terrorists that they will never win — and that is laudable.

More power to her.

Manchester Bomber's Sister Tries to Explain Away Murderous Brother's Actions

From: kenneth in the (212)
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Manchester bomber believed Muslims were mistreated and sought revenge:

Salman Abedi’s sister, Jomana Abedi, said her brother was "kind and loving" and that she was surprised by what he did this week. She said she thought he was driven by what he saw as injustices. “I think he saw children -- Muslim children -- dying everywhere, and wanted revenge. He saw the explosives America drops on children in Syria, and he wanted revenge,” she said. “Whether he got that is between him and God.”

Wow.

I have to say, this so-called rationale for her terrorist brother's behavior really gives me pause -- anything less than an unequivocal condemnation is pretty reprehensible. There is NEVER an excuse for blowing up a concert stadium, much less one full of children. And if you're going to try to offer some insight into a murderer's motive, perhaps it should be fueled with some semblance of logic instead of blaming the U.S. for something that Assad and Russia are responsible for. (Using this logic, why didn't he blow up people close to the Assads or Russian children?)

Besides, this terrorism scorecard is getting really tiresome. Yes, we should have never invaded Iraq. But September 11 happened before we did -- and if we're going to let past (and ongoing) misdeeds excuse people acting like savages, does that mean it's OK for me to go kill Brits in Northern Ireland on behalf of my paternal ancestors? Of course NOT.

As a friend noted: "[This kind of talk] does nothing to discourage the thought that most of these terrorists do what they do with the full knowledge of their immediate families. Gay people suffer daily, and it never occurred to me to blow up a concert. Or anything. At all."

Truly disgusting.

(Another one of her brothers was arrested on Tuesday for suspected ties to ISIS, might she be next?)

James Corden Holds Back Tears During Emotional Statement About the Manchester Bombing

From: Towleroad
Late Late Show host James Corden was in the middle of his show’s taping when news broke of the terrorist bombing at MEN Arena in Manchester and delivered an emotional message about a city that he loves.

Said Corden:

“When I think of Manchester, the place that I know, I think of the spirit of the people there and I’m telling you a more tight-knit group of people you’ll be hard pressed to find. Strong, proud, caring people with community at it’s core. And if it’s even possible, the spirit of the people of Manchester will grow even stronger this evening. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Manchester tonight: all of the staff at the arena, all of the security teams, all of the emergency services, Ariana and her team, and all of those families affected by tonight. We’ll all go to bed holding our little ones even tight this evening.”

Morrissey Attacks UK Prime Minister, London Mayor, and Queen Elizabeth After Manchester Bombing

From: Towleroad
Former Smiths front man Morrissey blasted UK Prime Minister Theresa May, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and (his more frequent target) Queen Elizabeth in a xenophobic Facebook post following the Manchester bombing.

Wrote Morrissey:

Celebrating my birthday in Manchester as news of the Manchester Arena bomb broke. The anger is monumental.
For what reason will this ever stop?
Theresa May says such attacks “will not break us”, but her own life is lived in a bullet-proof bubble, and she evidently does not need to identify any young people today in Manchester morgues. Also, “will not break us” means that the tragedy will not break her, or her policies on immigration. The young people of Manchester are already broken – thanks all the same, Theresa. Sadiq Khan says “London is united with Manchester”, but he does not condemn Islamic State – who have claimed responsibility for the bomb. The Queen receives absurd praise for her ‘strong words’ against the attack, yet she does not cancel today’s garden party at Buckingham Palace – for which no criticism is allowed in the Britain of free press. Manchester mayor Andy Burnham says the attack is the work of an “extremist”. An extreme what? An extreme rabbit?
In modern Britain everyone seems petrified to officially say what we all say in private. Politicians tell us they are unafraid, but they are never the victims. How easy to be unafraid when one is protected from the line of fire. The people have no such protections.

Morrissey
23 May 2017.

Alt-right homocon troll Milo Yiannopoulos was one of a crowd which agreed with Morrissey’s post, commenting “Amen.”

Morrissey’s last stint in the headlines took place last October, when he cheered the Brexit vote, calling it “magnificent.”

Ariana Grande Suspends World Tour After Manchester Attack

The singer is "incapable of performing for anyone” after the bombing
From: NewNowNext
Ariana Grande has suspended her Dangerous Woman world tour after Monday night’s terror attack at her concert in Manchester.

According to TMZ the singer will not perform this Thursday at the O2 Arena in London and “has decided for now to put the entire European tour on hold.”

The European leg of her tour included stops in England, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland and Germany.

It is now reported that 22 people were killed and 59 others were injured in the explosion at the concert on Monday night.

“We mourn the lives of children and loved ones taken by this cowardly act,” said Scooter Braun, Grande’s manager. “We ask all of you to hold the victims, their families, and all those affected in your hearts and prayers.”

TMZ also reports that the “Break Free” singer was “in hysterics” after the bombing. They quote a source saying “she’s incapable of performing for anyone” and her team are concerned about security at future concerts.

It is reported that Grande’s mother, Joan Grande, was about to go backstage to see her daughter when the explosion went off. She told the young concertgoers around her to come backstage with her where Grande’s security waited with them until they could safely leave the arena.

“We have been treating this as a terrorist incident,” said Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins. “Our priority is to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network.”

“The explosion coincided with the conclusion of a pop concert, which was attended by many young families and groups of children,” Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain told reporters in a televised statement. “This attack stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice — deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives.”

Ariana Grande Tweets Emotional Response to Manchester Bombing, Postpones World Tour

From: Cocktails and Cocktalk
Last night, we were hit with the devastating news that “one of the worst terrorist attacks on the UK” had been committed, when a bomb went off at Ariana Grande’s Manchester leg of her World Tour. The attack is being claimed by member of ISIS as another terrorist attack. Reports have claimed how the bomb detonated in the lobby of the M.E.N Arena, and “nuts and bolts” tore through fans eagerly anticipating the concert.

So far 22 have been confirmed dead, including an 8-year-old girl. And at least 119 have been injured, including 21 other children. Sick supporters of the radicalist group have praised the attack on Twitter, while Ariana and other celebrities have taken to social media to share their condolences.

Grande, said: ‘From the bottom of my heart, I am so so sorry. I don’t have words.’ In light of the tragic incident, Grande has postponed her world tour.

Mr. Coats told the senate arms committee that the attack had not yet been verified in association with ISIS, as they “claim responsibility” for every attack of this type. Although a cryptic tweet from an unidentified Twitter account, just hours before the attack, is being investigated – although the account has since been deleted.

Our thoughts, prayers and hearts are with anybody affected by the horrific act of violence. And we urge anybody attending events with a high-volume of people, to be extra cautious – and report anything slightly suspicious to the correct authoritative figure.

Twitter Suspends Hater Who Wished Gays Were Bombed in Manchester Attack

Homophobe Twitter User Suspended
From: Gay Pop Buzz
Twitter has rightfully taken the step of suspending a man who made vicious, homophobic remarks on the social media outlet. Specifically, he called on the Manchester suicide bomber to attack the gay area of town; Canal Street.

At the time of this post, some 22 people, including children, were violently killed by a suicide terrorist at an Ariana Grande concert in the northern English city last evening.

A further 59 were injured.

“In the worst terror attack to hit the UK since 7/7, the attacker detonated a huge bomb – thought to be packed with nails and bolts – as the gig ended in Manchester Arena.

Shortly after it was declared as a terrorist attack, one Twitter user angered many with his homophobic statement,” reports Gay Star News.

“Sickening stuff happening at the Manchester Arena,’ Tweeted the user. ‘If you’re going to bomb the place at least get Canal Street.’

When readers who saw the comment shard they would be reporting his account for threatening and blatant homophobia, he responded:

The first tweet was quickly deleted, but shortly afterwards Twitter removed the entire account.

Many relatives of dozens of missing concert-goers circulated their pictures on Twitter and Facebook in a bid to find them. Thousands of people had gone to Manchester for the concert. A missing gay man is still being sought by his brother.

“Theresa May has said police and security staff believe they know the identity of the attacker but will not reveal is now.
A 23-year-old man has since been arrested. Hundreds of people were evacuated from Arndale shopping centre today. Police have not confirmed if it is connected with yesteday’s attack.
Greater Manchester Police chief constable said the lone male attacker, who died in the blast, was carrying an improvised explosive device which he detonated.
‘Families and many young people were out to enjoy a concert at the Manchester Arena and have lost their lives,’ he said in a statement.
‘Our thoughts are with those 22 victims that we now know have died, the 59 people who have been injured and their loved ones. We continue to do all we can to support them. They are being treated at eight hospitals across Greater Manchester.”GSN

Police Confirm 22 Dead In Explosion At Ariana Grande Concert

"Everyone was in a huge state of panic."
From: NewNowNext
Police in Manchester, England, are confirming 22  people died after an explosion went off during an Ariana Grande concert in the city’s main arena. Authorities are still investigating the incident, which also led to at least 50 people being injured.

It’s still not clear if the explosion at Manchester Arena was accidental or the result of a terror attack. One concertgoer said they heard a loud blast at the end of Grande’s set, just after her encore.

“We were all exiting the venue when, around 10:40, 10:45pm, a huge bomb-like bang went off that hugely panicked everyone,” Majid Khan, 22, told the Guardian. “And we were all trying to flee the arena. Everyone was in a huge state of panic, calling each other as some had gone to the toilet whilst this had gone off.”
