Sperm competition between brothers and female choice

Females of the red jungle fowl (forest chicken) mate with multiple males, which can create competition between sperm of different males in order to fertilize the egg. In my PhD thesis, I explored the effect of brotherhood on sperm competition and female choice. Interestingly, the brother of the first male that the female has mated with invests more sperm in the female than the non-brother of the first male mate. However, the female ejects a higher proportion of sperm from the brother of the first mate and favours the sperm of the non-brother, facilitating a higher fertility by the non-brother’s sperm.
In addition to the main story, we showcase some of the interesting biology of sperm. First, sperm quality differs and while some move faster and are more forward-moving, others move in circles. Second, sperm of multiple males can interact with one another, sometimes even antagonistically.
Inspired by various sports, the dance movements in this video reflect the competitive nature in the sperm world. The two original music pieces in this video are (1) ‘Animal Love’, which is about the variety of sexual behavior in different species and (2) ‘Scenester’, a piece telling the story about a girl who keeps changing her ways and males trying to keep up with her.

"Best Friend" by Harry Nilsson

Jeez, should a theme song make you weep quietly every time you hear it? It's just that beginning bit about how your dad is your bestie—the rest of the song is oddly whimsical, sounding like good theme music for a mime at a kid's birthday party, and it also kinda sounds like they forgot to finish writing the lyrics.

Third Annual 100 Most Eligible Bachelors

DOUG BURKMAN

Fashion Designer/Businessman: Burkman Bros.

It was pretty clear from an early age
that Doug and Ben Burkman would best
achieve success as a team. Having
developed a taste for stylish clothes
early on in the game (it's all about
being the cutest kid on the block,
isn't it?), these entrepreneurial
Canadian brothers established a variety of summertime business ventures to pay for their wardrobes.

Fast forward to the pair honing their skills (together, of course) as designers at Gap Inc. and you get the picture: that the brothers would one day establish their own clothing line together was inevitable.

With the launch of their eponymous label, Burkman Bros, the pair have taken a refreshingly honest "if I wouldn't wear it, I wouldn't make it" approach to their designs.

Taking inspiration from their far-flung travels and perhaps the odd muse they met along the way, the Burkmans deftly updated classic menswear pieces without ever taking stylistic flourishes too far. Maybe an eyedropper of Asian influence, thank you very much, but no more. Each season takes fresh influence from somewhere or something else, while the brothers' skilled restraint keeps the overall tone cool and considered.

The result is a distinctive, casual menswear line that is strong, sexy and never gratuitous.

50-year-old Barry may be best known as the evil Hubie in The Legend Of Billie Jean and Wolfman in Top Gun (and more recently as Tom in Friday Night Lights), but he’s had quite a diverse career, including the 1985 TV movie Consenting Adult, in which he played a gay teen coming out to parents Martin Sheen and Marlo Thomas. But the main reason why he’s here is for the 1989 softcore classic Warm Summer Rain, in which he was frequently, totally naked. It was another VHS tape I owned that sadly fell apart from … too much use.

Pat came back to pop/rock after a five year absence (in between which she recorded a blues album), and released Gravity’s Rainbow in 1993, and learned that if you stay away too long … bad things can happen. The album peaked at #85, becoming her first all-out flop, and the single “Somebody’s Baby” (which, like “Hell Is For Children,” took on a social cause) didn’t fare too well either. It didn’t even chart on the Hot 100.

Male Chastity Devices Now Available In Three Great Finishes

From:  Queerty
 Behold, the male chastity device!
These lockable sheaths restrict a person from touching themselves and are evidently all the rage. The market has become so huge, in fact, that CB-X, the self-proclaimed “World Leader In Male Chastity,” is now offering a designer collection that includes a variety of finishes, including wood, chrome, and camouflage.
According to the CB-X website:
Male chastity devices restrict a man from touching his genitals for sexual pleasure. The male chastity device gives the Keyholder control over the sexual fulfillment of both partners by denying the wearer the touch he has had all of his life. His focus is now on when he can experience sexual gratification, and the Keyholder has complete control over the wearer’s pleasure. This denied access means the wearer must please the Keyholder in order to receive the pleasure he craves.
Each device consists of a plastic cage that closes around the penis and a ring that goes around the base of the cock, trapping the balls between the ring and the cage. (Eek!) Then a small padlock secures the whole contraption making it inescapable without the key. (Yikes!) Each device is vented for hygiene and has different sized rings and spacers to allow for a customized fit. (How convenient.)
The chastity devices retail at about $150 and can be ordered on the CB-X website. For your privacy, all items are shipped in discreet plain parcels. But choose your finish wisely, boys, because according to the company’s website: “Due to the nature of our products, we do not accept returns.”
Sounds a bit torturous to us, but then again, isn't't’t that the point?

Marc St. James
Ugly Betty

Actor: Michael Urie
2006-2010
Previous Rank: 12

Marc St. James was not meant to stay on ABC’s Ugly Betty. In fact, he was supposed to be one of many assistants MODE Creative Director Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) fired every episode. But Marc, in all his curly-haired glory, became an audience favorite…and landed the gig permanently.

And thank Madonna he did. As Slater’s main watchdog, Marc was comedic gold, delivering one-line zingers—typically about Betty’s (America Ferrera) homely appearance— and frothy slapstick week to week. Marc personified the inner fashionisto inside all of us. And he was pretty damn cute, too.

But underneath all of Marc’s flamboyant bravado was a young man yearning for self-discovery. Sound familiar? It was because of this, not any of his flair, that Marc became a hero.

He fought for self-love when he painfully came out to his less-than-accepting mother in season one. He fought to be with whomever he wants, particularly when he finally accepted his love for Cliff—a hairy chub who doesn't fit into Marc’s fashion-centric world—in season two. Marc fought for Justin, Betty’s closeted nephew. He fought for Wilhelmina. He even fought for Betty—well, sometimes.

Yes, Marc might be television’s funniest fashion savant. But he’s more than that: He’s a fighter.

A fighter in Fendi, no less.

"Sufferin' Till Suffrage"
Original Air Date
February 21, 1976
This song teaches about the steps women took to get their right to vote.
Lyrics to "Sufferin' Till Suffrage"
(Yeah! Hurray!)
Now you have heard of Women's Rights,
And how we've tried to reach new heights.
If we're "all created equal"...
That's us too!

(Yeah!)

But you will proba ... bly not recall
That it's not been too ... too long at all,
Since we even had the right to
Cast a vote.

(Well!)

Well, sure, some men bowed down and called us "Mrs." (Yeah!)
Let us hang the wash out and wash the dishes, (Huh!)
But when the time rolled around to elect a president...

What did they say, Sister, (What did they say?)

They said, uh, "See ya later, alligator,
And don't forget my ... my mashed potatoes,
'Cause I'm going downtown to cast my vote for president."

Oh, we were suffering until suffrage,
Not a woman here could vote, no matter what age,
Then the 19th Amendment struck down that restrictive rule. (Oh yeah!)

And now we pull down on the lever,
Cast our ballots and we endeavor
To improve our country, state, county, town, and school.

(Tell 'em 'bout it!)

Those pilgrim women who ...
Who braved the boat
Could cook the turkey, but they ...
They could not vote.
Even Betsy Ross who sewed the flag was left behind that first election day.

(What a shame, Sisters!)

Then Susan B. Anthony (Yeah!) and Julia Howe,
(Lucretia!) Lucretia Mott, (and others!) they showed us how;
They carried signs and marched in lines
Until at long last the law was passed.

Oh, we were suffering until suffrage,
Not a woman here could vote, no matter what age,
Then the 19th Amendment struck down that restrictive rule. (Oh yeah!)

And now we pull down on the lever,
Cast our ballots and we endeavor
To improve our country, state, county, town, and school. (Right On! Right On!)

Yes the 19th Amendment
Struck down that restrictive rule. (Right On! Right On!)

Yes the 19th Amendment
Struck down that restrictive rule.
(Yeah, yeah!
Yeah, yeah!
Right on!
We got it now!)

Since 1920...
Sisters, unite!
Vote on!

November 16th is National Button Day

Button Day is a fun day to collect, use, and just enjoy buttons. Button come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors and designs. There is an amazingly endless variety of buttons for your collection.

But, wait a minute.... is that the meaning of this day!? Maybe, the purpose of this day is to wear buttons. You know, those diverse buttons that send a message for political purposes. Or, ones that have funny sayings. Or, a button with a smiley face to cheer everyone up.

The origins of this day are unknown. So, we can't be certain to the real meaning of this day.

And, that could be a good thing. It means you can celebrate today in anyway you want. Here are our suggestions. I suspect you may have more.....

Button Collecting and Display Day - collect and display clothing buttons
Button Up Day- 'cuz it's cold outside!
Pushing Your Buttons Day - you're kidding me, aren't you!?
Belly Button Day - now, here's one that could be real fun
Belly Button Fuzz Day - it's amazing what you find in there.
Wear Buttons Day - skip the political buttons. My favorite is a Smiley button.
However you choose to celebrate, have a Happy Button Day!

Bad postcard of the week:

Iron Mountain's 'Big John' looking very little
From:  The Grand Rapids Press
I can only guess that the photographer has some unnatural fear of mines – or giant miners.

I think the intended subject of this week’s wonderfully bad postcard is “Big John,” billed as the world’s largest miner. It’s either John, or the sky, or the dirt road, or the flashy “open sign” or maybe even the camper. We just don’t know.

I can’t authenticate his claim as the world’s largest miner, especially after learning about the smack down over who has the world’s largest pecan. Again, we just don’t know.

The postcard back yields few answers: “Iron Mountain Iron Mine. Guided underground tours. Educational, exciting, entertaining. This is the view a visitor sees as he approaches the Iron Mountain Iron Mine, one of America’s Greatest Mine Attractions. This Mine is visited by thousands of people each year from all over the world.

What that should say is that this is the view – from Wisconsin!

Seriously, Casey Kasem used to read long-distance dedications for people who were standing closer than the photographer was to this sign.

The always wonderful RoadsideArchitecture.com tells us that Big John is a 40-foot wooden sign built in the 1960s, and that it has been repainted six or seven times since then. It was refinished with marine plywood to keep it from peeling.

I’m wondering why the photographer didn’t wait until part of Big John wasn't obscured by the camper, but frankly, that’s among the least of his sins.

Colleague Angela Wittrock donated this card after visiting the mine this summer, and said the tour was pretty neat. The mine itself was operated from 1870 until 1945 – about 20 years before Big John appeared.

Closer to home, educator and historian Dave Britten sent this exciting view of the majestic fountains inside Grand Rapids' Woodland Mall. I’m guessing that this beauty was issued not long after the mall opened in 1968.
Nothing says more about a town than a sterile photo of the inside of a shopping mall,” he wrote.

Sterile? This one’s got actual people and a Sears and a Kresge! Who wouldn't want to slap a stamp on this baby and tell loved ones in distant lands that you have a new place to buy socks, and were soothed by water tossed in the air?

November 16th is International Day for Tolerance

The International Day for Tolerance is a time for people to learn about respecting and recognizing the rights and beliefs of others. It is also a time of reflection and debate on the negative effects of intolerance. Live discussions and debates take place across the world on this day, focusing on how various forms of injustice, oppression, racism and unfair discrimination have a negative impact on society.

Many educators use the theme of this day to help students in classrooms or in lecture theatres understand issues centered on tolerance, human rights and non-violence. These issues are also found in text books, lesson material and other educational resources used for this event. The UN Chronicle Online Education also features articles about tolerance.  Information on the day is disseminated through flyers, posters, news articles and broadcasts, and other promotional material to raise people’s awareness about the importance of tolerance. Other activities include essays, dialogues and story-telling of people’s personal accounts of intolerance and how it affects their lives.

Human rights activists also use this day as an opportunity to speak out on human rights laws, especially with regard to banning and punishing hate crimes and discrimination against minorities. In the workplace, special training programs, talks, or messages from workplace leaders about the importance of tolerance are utilized on this da
