A Character Is Coming Out On One Of The CW’s Superhero Shows

Executive producer Greg Berlanti says it will be a "significant" character.

Attention superhero fans: A character on one of the CW’s series set in the DC Comics universe will be coming out as gay next season.

“One of the characters on one of the shows is going to be exploring their sexuality and coming out,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said at the Television Critics Association’s press tour earlier this month. “We’re very excited about that.”

Currently, the network airs The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which have all already featured gay or bisexual characters.

Will it be an existing character who comes out or a new face? And will he or she be super-powered or a mere mortal.

Greg Berlanti, the out mastermind behind the DC television universe, will only tease that it is a “significant” character.”

“The only reason we wouldn’t [say who] is we really want the audience to enjoy the character developments and not necessarily be ahead of the storyline.”

The possibilities are nearly infinite, but here are a few fan theories.

Colton Haynes has confirmed he’s returning to Arrow for its upcoming fifth season. Could Roy Harper be following Haynes’ off-camera lead and coming out? (We’d pair him with gay hero Curtis Holt, a.k.a. Mr. Terrific, except that Holt is already happily married.)

Berlanti has stocked his shows with out actors—including Legends’ Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller and Arrow’s John Barrowman—any one of whom could come out onscreen, too. (Miller once commented he thought his character, Captain Cold, was pansexual.)

We already reported that Batwoman and police captain Maggie Sawyer will be joining Supergirl’s cast. In the comics, the two are already exes, but perhaps one of them will just be discovering her sexuality when the show returns.

Then again, the TCA press tour also revealed that Lance Henriksen is joining Legends of Tomorrow as the Justice Society member Obsidian. In comics continuity, Obsidian came out as gay several years ago, but he’s also several decades younger than the 76-year-old Henriksen, so we can’t assume anything.

Another idea: The CW Seed, the network’s streaming service, has picked up Freedom Fighters: The Ray, a new animated series about a gay hero with light-based powers. The Ray (who was hetero in DC comics continuity) could make the leap from cartoon to live-action, a la Vixen (Megalyn E.K.).

We’ll have to wait till Arrow et al return in October to find out which, if any, of these theories bears fruit.

One more thing you can look forward to when the new fall TV season returns: A two-part musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl. Since the shows star Glee alums Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist, it’s kind of a no-brainer.
