We need to discuss Soul Kiss. It was Olivia’s most critically maligned album. It’s also my favorite Olivia album. It was slick, sexy, and veered into camp at times, which should not be dismissed. The gloriously schlocky “Culture Shock” is universally loathed, but I think it’s a hoot.
Olivia released her second album of duets, A Celebration In Song, in 2008, and it featured this stirring duet with fellow cancer survivor Delta Goodrem.
Recorded shortly after the death of Freddie Mercury, “Last Song” tells the story of a father reuniting with his estranged gay son, who is dying of an AIDS-related illness. It peaked at #23, but even 20 years later it’s incredibly affecting.
While often regarded as a punchline these days, Dionne Warwick not only sang some of the definitive versions of the classic Bacharach-David songs, this song raised more than $3 million for amfAR when few celebrities were doing anything about the AIDS crisis at all.
Here’s the thing about “Into The Night.” If it wasn’t for that ultra-creepy opening line, it would be one of the classic ballads of the 80’s, and in fact was a hit twice, first peaking at #11 in 1980 and then reaching #20 when it was re-released in 1989. But when a middle-aged man sings “She’s just 16 years old, leave her alone they said,’ it takes it to another To Catch a Predator level.
That feeling is magnified a thousand times by the insane music video, which is so cringe-inducing and … wrong … it easily wins this crown.
The first song from Two Of A Kind on the list, this duet with John Travolta reached #3 on the AC chart, and was the last time Travolta was on any music chart.
The second single from Soul Kiss was written for Tina Turner (by the same songwriters of “What’s Love Got To Do With It”), but when she turned it down, Olivia grabbed it.
The faboo Chaka had the biggest hit of her career with “I Feel For You,” and then never hit the top 40 again with a solo song. It wasn’t for lack of trying, though. She had plenty of chart flops (including the underrated “Love Of A Lifetime,” which can be seen on the first Lost Hits list), the most egregious of which was “Through The Fire.” Written specifically for her by David Foster, this gorgeous ballad spent a total of 19 weeks on the Hot 100, while climbing no higher than #60, an incredible chart run for such a low-charting record.
