May 6th is Child Care Provider Day

It is a special day to recognize child care providers, teachers and other educators of young children everywhere. Started in 1996 by a group of volunteers in New Jersey, Child Care Provider Day is appropriately celebrated each year on the Friday before Mother's Day. The founding organizers saw the need to recognize the tireless efforts of providers who care for children of working parents. Momentum and support for this event has grown each year and recognition presently includes individuals and government organizations throughout the United States.

May 6th is Tuba Day

International Tuba Day recognizes musicians around the world who struggle with the weight and size of their big instrument. It's truly an important musical instrument, that no concert or symphonic bandleader would want to be without. It's big, deep sounds provide lots of character and "Oomph" to concert music. Can you imagine a Tuba-less marching band!?

The tuba player has a big job. He lugs this heavy instrument around. He provides the big wind that makes a big impact in the musical world. If you see a Tuba player today, give them some well deserved recognition. If you are a Tuba player, then toot your horn (errr Tuba). We love 'ya!

Here's a few hefty Tuba factoids:

Tubas come in varying sizes, weighing from a dozen pounds to 50 pounds!
The Tuba was patented in 1835 by Wiebrecht and Moritz in Germany
The number of valves on a Tuba is not standardized. A Tuba can have 3,4,5 or six valves.

May 6th is No Diet Day

No Diet Day represents a journey of nearly half-way into the year, and nearly half a year from our New Year’s Resolutions. For those who have held fast to them, this often means that they have endured five months of careful consideration of their diets. After all, Summer is nearly upon us and the past six months have typically been used to drop off enough weight to leave them looking fantastic in their Summer clothes. Such dedication deserves recognition and reward, and that’s why No Diet Day exists. On this holiday adherents are free to let themselves loose from the shackles of their diet and enjoy one day of glorious freedom.

History of No Diet Day
There has been a movement in recent years to shed the shame typically associated with being less than Hollywood perfect. The photoshopped images found in fashion and beauty magazines have been marked as a direct cause of a rising instance of eating disorders among the youth. Too long has health been associated with unrealistic body types and unhealthy, dangerous fad diets. No Diet Day has been pushed forward with the intention of promoting healthy life styles at all body types. This holiday has been found to be most promoted in those countries that have feminist movements going strong.

Bodies can be beautiful at all shapes and sizes, with both the svelte look of the athletic beach nut and the more Grecian and Rubenesque body types merely exemplifying the natural body type. Considering that the failures of dieting often result in yoyo-ing weight, with all of the weight lost being regained in almost every case within 5 years. To combat this incredibly unhealthy habit organizations all over the world have been engaged in forcing the fashion industry to label those images that have been modified, or outlawing the use of photoshop altogether.

How to Celebrate No Diet Day
Celebrating No Diet Day is best done by recognizing that your own body is beautiful exactly as it is. De-emphasizing your efforts to shed weight to look a particular way, it is far better to celebrate the holiday with efforts at beginning to live a healthier lifestyle altogether. Worry less about your final goal, and more about getting out and being active and keeping your body healthy. Losing weight rapidly or shooting for unrealistic body types is an excellent way of causing yourself harm in the pursuit of greater health. Instead, love your body by finding active hobbies and love yourself the way you look!

Sigmund Freud's 160th Birthday

Did you wonder what your dream meant this morning? The idea that dreams "mean" anything or that we have an active subconscious mind, is a concept we owe to Sigmund Freud, who was born 160 years ago today. Freud is best known as the father of psychoanalysis, the method of resolving mental illness through a dialogue between a doctor and patient. The Freudian method of interpretation – looking for meaning beyond the surface of things – now extends far beyond the sphere of psychotherapy. Freudian terms like "narcissism," "sibling rivalry," "free association," and "death wish" are part of our vernacular, and Freud's theories continue to fuel heated debate among academics.

A dimpled leather couch might be the typical visual associated with Freud and other therapists, but Doodler Kevin Laughlin instead created this iceberg. With a vast hidden base, the iceberg references the murky depths of the unconscious mind. More importantly, the design draws our eye to the horizon, reminding us how the genius of Freud's practice rests in the space between doctor and patient, reader and text, human and world.
