Esther Afua Ocloo’s 98th Birthday

As both an entrepreneur and an advocate for microlending, “Auntie Ocloo” worked tirelessly to help others like her succeed. Esther Afua Ocloo had only six shillings to her name — less than a dollar — when she made and then sold her first jar of marmalade as a teenager in the 1930s.

Esther was determined to expand her livelihood of making marmalade and orange juice, but she needed a loan to increase production, and credit was hard to come by for women with little economic resources. It took persistence and a supply contract to secure the money to start her company, Nkulenu Industries.

After traveling to England to learn the latest techniques in food processing, Esther returned home and shared those skills with other Ghanaian women. Perhaps more importantly, she taught them everything she knew about starting and running a business, which put more money in their pockets. She made such an impact that in 1975 she was invited to the first U.N. World Conference on Women.

Esther and other advisors knew that lending money to women could have a ripple effect, improving the prosperity and health of the women as well as their communities. But because they lacked collateral, low-income women were often ignored by banks. So in 1979, Esther helped found and became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Women’s World Banking, which provides millions of low-income women with the small loans needed to reach their financial goals.

On what would have been her 98th birthday, today’s Doodle shows Esther empowering the women of Ghana with the tools to improve their lives and communities.

Cosmo Centrefolds 2011

From:  Cosmo UK
Stuart Baggs
Breakout star of The Apprentice, Stuart "The Brand" Baggs revealed a more philanthropic side in our Cosmo shoot: "I like to help causes like Everyman that are a bit hidden away. Men can be a bit funny talking about testicular cancer."

Stuart Baggs was a telecoms entrepreneur from the Isle of Man and was 21 when he appeared on The Apprentice. He was educated at Ramsey Grammar School, and had a fear of The Muppets character Sam Eagle. His first business venture was when he sold yo-yos on the school playground. At thirteen he launched his own telecommunications company, Bluewave Communications, which became a limited company on his eighteenth birthday and which he continued to run. He styled himself as "Stuart Baggs—the brand" and nicknamed himself "Herr Baggs" in the crisp-selling task.

Baggs produced some memorable quotes throughout the series, including: "Everything I touch turns to sold", "Excuse me, sir, you look like a sausage connoisseur" (quoted to Lord Sugar), "I'm not a one-trick pony, I'm not a ten-trick pony, I have a whole field of ponies—and they're literally all running towards this job", and the infamous "I have to rein in my own extreme masculinity in this task." Baggs was eliminated in week 11. WalesOnline perceived him as "one of the truly great Apprentice villains."

Before firing him, Lord Sugar told Baggs that he was "full of shit" and guilty of dressing up his credentials for his own gain, with particular reference to a telecommunications licence issued in 2006. Sugar added that Baggs' claims had left him annoyed at himself, as he had fired Liz Locke in the previous week before he was aware of the lie. Baggs denied that he had lied on his CV about the company. Baggs was not invited back to participate in the final.

Baggs appeared as a contestant on Channel 4's Celebrity Five Go To in May 2011. He also appeared on Pointless Celebrities with fellow ex-Apprentice contestant Joanna Riley in July 2011. Whilst on the show, he claimed to have tried a food called Panayiotou, when in actuality, it was George Michael's surname. He was a regular panelist/reporter for Big Brother's Bit On The Side from August 2011. In February 2013, he appeared on The Sarah Millican Television Programme and said that The Apprentice had "made him the most unemployable person in the country". In November 2014, he appeared as a contestant on Come Dine With Me in his home country, which he called "great fun" while admitting that he was "a terrible cook".

Baggs was found dead on 30 July 2015, aged 27, as a result of an asthma attack.

A Protester Pelted Martin Shkreli with Dog Poop

Not all heroes wear capes.
From: Esquire
Even though Donald Trump will be the  president, the universe proved Friday night that at least some bullies get what they deserve. An angry protester threw what appeared to be dog poop, hitting despised pharma bro Martin Shkreli in the face.

Shkreli, best known for raising the price of a critical cancer drug from $13.50 to $750 per pill, was scheduled to appear at the University of California, Davis for a speaking event alongside another infamous troll, Milo Yiannopoulos.

The event was promoted as "a Twitter villain extravaganza," as both men are ultra-right agitators and enthusiastic Trump supporters who have been kicked off Twitter for harassing women.

milo.yiannopoulos

The tour returns this Friday the 13th,

with guest star Martin Shkreli. A killer night ahead of us, UC Davis...

Protesters, including some UC Davis students, were angered that the men were speaking on campus at the invitation of the Davis College Republicans and managed to shut down the event by blockading the entrance.

Caught in the fray, was jerk face Martin Shkreli, who was captured on video by ABC 10's Frances Wang as angry protesters surrounded him. One person in the crowd screamed, "You piece of shit!" at Shkreli and threw what appears to be dog poop at him, hitting Shkreli in the face.

In the video, posted on Twitter, Shkreli poses for a selfie with a fan, then steps back, wiping something from his jacket and cheek.

College Republicans rescheduled the event for 1 P.M. PST Saturday on the UC Davis Quad. "We will not stand for the regressive left perpetuating violence, censoring speech, and spreading hate," the group said on its Facebook page.

Pro-tip: If you're against "spreading hate," you probably shouldn't give Milo Yiannopoulos and Martin Shkreli a platform to peddle their vile, intolerant, hateful filth.

Gay Billionaire Peter Thiel Will Be Donald Trump’s Tech Advisor

“I’ll try to help the president in any way I can.”
From: NewNowNext
At least one member of the LGBT community is riding high after Donald Trump’s Election Day victory: Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel will be the president-elect’s adviser on technology and innovation.

Silicon Valley distanced itself from Thiel after he came out in support of Trump, speaking at the Republican National Convention this summer and writing him a $1.25 million campaign check last month.

“A page in the book of history has turned, and there is an opening to think about some of our problems from a new perspective,” Thiel told The New York Times. “I’ll try to help the president in any way I can.”

Thiel said he has felt that the political optimism of recent decades “was deeply out of touch,” leading him to put his weight behind Trump. “In some ways, a more pessimistic candidate would do better, because they would resonate with these broad economic realities.”

There had been rumors Thiel was going to be tapped for the Supreme Court by Trump—he had applied for clerkships with Justices Scalia and Kennedy when he was younger.

But whether he’s on the bench or just has the president’s ear, it appears his gamble has paid off.

“What Trump represents isn’t crazy,” Thiel said in a recent speech. “And it isn’t going away.”

Peter Thiel Hasn’t Spoken with Trump About SCOTUS and LGBT Rights, Still Endorses Him

From: Towleroad
Gay Republican billionaire and Donald Trump supporter Peter Thiel says he has had not had conversations with Trump about LGBT rights and the Supreme Court, yet remains confident that Trump will expand and not reduce rights if elected president.

Thiel made his remarks during a event at the National Press Club in Washington where he gave prepared remarks and took questions about his support of Trump, his funding the lawsuit that brought down Gawker, and more.

When conversation turned to Trump’s stance on LGBT issues and whether he would appoint anti-LGBT justices to the Supreme Court, Thiel said, “I don’t have conversations with Mr. Trump on that particular subject.”

ABC News reports:

Asked whether he had received private assurances from the Republican nominee that he would protect recent civil rights advances for the gay community, Thiel said he had had no such conversations, but that he was confident that Trump would defend an expansion of gay rights.
He said that Trump represents “a sea change from Bush 43,” referring to President George W. Bush. Thiel pointed to Bush’s negative campaigning over gay rights in 2004 in explaining his comments.

Thiel made waves at the Republican National Convention this year when he publicly endorsed Trump, slammed “fake culture wars”, and said of transgender bathroom rights, “who cares?”

Said Thiel at the time, “I don’t pretend to agree with every plank in our party’s platform but fake culture wars only distract us from our country’s decline, and nobody in this campaign is being honest about it but Donald Trump.”

In September, reports circulated that Thiel was telling friends Trump would appoint him to the Supreme Court if elected president.

More recently, Thiel donated $1.25 million to Trump’s campaign on the heels of the ‘P—y’-gate scandal.

Throughout the campaign, Trump has courted the anti-LGBT vote. Most alarmingly, he released a list of justices he would appoint to the Supreme Court, justices that would be bad news for LGBT people.

CNBC has more on Thiel’s latest defense of Trump:

“No matter what happens in this election, what Trump represents isn’t crazy and it’s not going away,” he said, according to prepared remarks. “He points toward a new Republican Party beyond the dogmas of Reaganism. He points even beyond the remaking of one party to a new American politics that overcomes denial, rejects bubble thinking and reckons with reality.
“When the distracting spectacles of this election season are forgotten and the history of our time is written, the only important question will be whether or not that new politics came too late.”

Thiel also added that he’s supporting Trump because Trump will make America a “normal country”:

“Just as much as it’s about making America great, Trump’s agenda is about making America a normal country. A normal country doesn’t have a half-trillion-dollar trade deficit. A normal country doesn’t fight five simultaneous undeclared wars. In a normal country, the government actually does its job.”

Gay Billionaire Peter Thiel: “What Trump Represents Isn’t Crazy And It’s Not Going Away”

“I don’t agree with everything Donald Trump has said and done, and I don’t think the millions of other people voting for him do, either.”
From: NewNowNext
Paypal founder Peter Thiel has been an unexpected Donald Trump booster, speaking this summer at the Republican National Convention and writing a $1.25 million check to the Trump campaign earlier this month.

In a press conference today, the gay billionaire unpacked his support for the maverick reality TV star, saying he points “toward a new Republican Party beyond the dogmas of Reaganism… even beyond the remaking of one party to a new American politics that overcomes denial, rejects bubble-thinking and reckons with reality.”

“No matter what happens in this election, what Trump represents isn’t crazy and it’s not going away,” said Thiel, an early investor in Facebook.

“When the distracting spectacles of this election season are forgotten and the history of our time is written, the only important question will be whether or not that new politics came too late.”

He admitted he doesn’t agree with everything Trump has said and done, and doesn’t believe his supporters do either.

“Nobody thinks his comments about women were acceptable… But I don’t think the voters pull a lever in order to endorse a candidate’s flaws.”

Thiel doesn’t seem to be endorsing Trump at all, so much as he’s endorsing anything but the status quo, explaining, “We’re voting for Trump because we judge the leadership of our country to have failed.”

Buzfeed CEO Tweets About Ivanka Trump’s Interest In “Mulatto Cocks” — What In The Huh?

From: Queerty
Can we all just agree that the whole Trump family is pretty darn gross?

After that tape came out of Trump making disgusting comments about sexual assault, Ivanka Trump issued a statement that “That’s not language consistent with any conversation I’ve ever had with him, certainly, or any conversation I’ve overheard, so it was a bit jarring for me to hear.”

Yeah, sure, Ivanka. Your dad’s a real paragon of virtue.

Her statement didn’t quite ring true with Buzzfeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti, who tweeted that he was in her presence when she made some pretty unpleasant statements of her own:
Good grief. Not to spoil the suspense for Ivanka, but “mulatto cock” looks just like any other person’s: some are big, some are small, they come in all different shapes and sizes and colors, and they are all pretty fun. Also, the people attached to them are probably pretty unlikely to want to show them to you if that’s how you refer to them, no matter how rich you claim to be.

After hearing something like that, it’s hard to forget, and so Peretti repeated the story to friends over the years. Now, he’s sharing it with us — lucky us! — because it’s just another example of how you can’t trust anything that comes out of that family.

Gay Billionaire Peter Thiel Donates $1.25 Million To Trump Campaign

Thiel declared he was “proud to be gay” at this summer's Republican National Convention.
From: NewNowNext
Internet billionaire Peter Thiel just wrote a check for $1.25 million to help Donald Trump’s flagging presidential campaign.

Thiel, who co-founded PayPal and was an early Facebook investor, is making the donation through a combination of direct contributions to Trump’s campaign and Super PACs, the Washington Blade confirms.

Thiel, 48, has also donated to Carly Fiorina’s failed presidential campaign, Utah Republican Mike Lee’ senate bid, and gay sheriff Paul Babeu’s House campaign in Arizona.

Though cagey on LGBT rights, Trump has promised supporters he would work to undo marriage equality and nominate Supreme Court justices whose politics align with the late Antonin Scalia.

In his convention speech in July, Thiel praised Trump’s views on foreign policy and the war on terror, and called issues like North Carolina’s bathroom bill “a distraction from our real problems.”

Earlier this year, he admitted he spent $10 million to finance several lawsuits against Gawker, which had outed him as gay in 2007. Faced with crippling debt, the blog shuttered in August.

“A story that violates privacy and serves no public interest should never be published,” said Thiel.

PharmaBro Martin Shkreli Is Auctioning Off The Chance To Punch Him In The Face

Anyone have $78,000 we can borrow?
From: NewNowNext
There are a lot of people who would like to sock Martin Shkreli in the kisser, and now someone will get the chance.

The former pharmaceutical company CEO, who outraged millions by raising the price of an AIDS drug more than 5000%, is auctioning off the chance to punch him in the face for charity.

Shkreli went on Twitter Monday and announced one lucky (and wealthy) bidder could pay to punch or slap him in the face, with proceeds benefiting the family of Mike Kulich, his recently deceased PR rep.

Kulich, 29, died suddenly last week, leaving behind a fiancé and a young son who survived cancer.

Shkreli says he’s already received bids for $25,500 and $78,000.

In December, the former head of Turing Pharmaceuticals, was arrested on securities fraud charges. His trial has been set for June 26, 2017.

Florida Woman Wins Right to Punch Martin Shkreli in the Deplorable Face

From: Towleroad
Loathsome former Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli, who made headlines last fall after jacking the price of an AIDS drug by 5400%, this week auctioned off the right to punch him in the face.

Shkreli held the auction to raise money for treatment for a friend’s 6-year-old son who is battling cancer (maybe his heart isn’t 100% coal?).

A woman named Katie from Florida won the auction. Shkreli offered to broadcast it on VICE media if they were willing.

In September 2015, Shkreli, a former hedge fund manager, hiked the price of Daraprim, used to help (among others) AIDS patients with compromised immune systems, from $13.50 a tablet to $750 per tablet. Turing announced it had raised $90 million from Shkreli and other investors in its first round of financing on the same day as the pricejacking.

Shkreli promised to drop the price of Daraprim shortly after public outcry but his solution pleased few.

And despite pledging to cut its price, Turing Pharmaceuticals announced it would only provide discounts of up to 50 percent, for hospitals. Shkreli later said he regretted that he hadn’t charged even more for the drug.

In February, Shkreli appeared before the House Oversight Committee for a hearing on drug pricing. He was escorted from the room after refusing to speak, asserting his Fifth Amendment rights.

55 Power Couples You Should Know

From: OUT
Chris Hughes
Sean Eldridge
We have only begun to hear the names of these two, but the twentysomethings are already ambitious beyond most people's wildest dreams. Not only does Hughes have deep pockets as one of the original gang of Facebook, he was also the owner, publisher, and editor of the New Republic from 2012 to 2016. Eldridge may have made an unsuccessful bid for Congress, but we're still left asking: What will be next? We have decades to figure it out.

55 Power Couples You Should Know

From: OUT
Nick Denton
Derrence Washington

When Gawker founder Nick Denton married Derrence Washington in 2015, the vows spoke for themselves. "When I was about to get engaged to Derrence," Denton told Out, "a friend of mine gave me some advice — some advice from a person who’s been very influential in Derrence’s life: Beyoncé. If you like it, put a ring on it. I was a little bit nervous about the wedding, but I can say one thing: I had no anxiety, no hesitation, no thoughts, no sleepless nights. I wanted to be married. I wanted to be married to Derrence."
