Headmaster is an American half-hour television comedy-drama starring Andy Griffith and broadcast by CBS in the United States during the 1970-71 season.
Headmaster marked the return to series television of Griffith, whose previous eponymous show had been one of CBS's major hits of the 1960s prior to his voluntary departure and a program which was still in production (as Mayberry R.F.D.), when Headmaster was launched. With Headmaster, Griffith fulfilled his desire to be cast in a television series as something other than a rural bumpkin dispensing folksy wisdom; here his character, Andy Thompson, was the headmaster of a prestigious Californian private school, the Concord School. His wife, Margaret (Claudette Nevins), was an English teacher; his best friend was the school's main athletic coach, Jerry Brownell (Jerry Van Dyke). Mr. Purdy (Parker Fennelly) was the school's caretaker.
Despite being aired in the Friday night 8:30 Eastern time slot vacated by the popular Hogan's Heroes, a theme song sung by Linda Ronstadt, and featuring arguably the biggest CBS star of the 1960s, Headmaster did not prove to be popular and was routinely beaten in the Nielsen ratings by both The Partridge Family on ABC and The Name of the Game on NBC. When this pattern became apparent, production of Headmaster was terminated, with the last first-run episode being broadcast January 1, 1971, and the program replaced by a new situation comedy starring Griffith, The New Andy Griffith Show. This replacement program met with little more success than Headmaster, and was last broadcast on May 21, 1971. In June 1971, Headmaster returned to the time slot in reruns, with the last repeat episode being aired on September 10, 1971.
This sitcom about a gay man (Tyler Ritter) and his close-knit, sports-living, Irish Catholic was based on the creator Brian Gallivan’s real family. But that didn’t save it from being pulled after 11 episodes.

The ICA show, ‘Side On’, is all glistening bathhouse tiles and steamy windows — or are they two-way mirrors? The exhibition maps out various public and private pleasure nests, and rummages through the evidence as if from a nightclub’s lost and found. Viewers are invited to cruise dark corridors, and get all scandalized by the telltale white powder and makeup traces. Every room anally arranged with a touch of Dada glee.
Over at Southard Reid (located down a tiny back alley in Soho, the show called ‘End Up’ was announced in local gay rags Boyz and QX) Prem has built a temporary monument to shuttered gay bars, which are dropping like flies in his hometown of London, by the way. The black bench constructions lining the gallery are perfectly apt for an underwear party, with flesh-colored paper towel holder ready-mades on hand for man-sized wiping. It’s like the set of a Triga video, just before the action gets going.
Catch Prem Sahib this Friday, 16 October 2015 as part of the Can Artists Still Afford to Live in London? panel at the Frieze Art Fair. Side On, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts on The Mall in London SW1Y 5AH, runs through 15 November 2015. Check the ICA website for various special events to coincide with the show. End Up at Southard Reid, 7 Royalty Mews in Soho, London W1D 3AS, runs through 14 November 2015.

It’s Frieze Week in London, and BUTT’s placing all bets on Prem Sahib, not that it’s a competition or anything. It’s just that his show at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, full of alluring surfaces and innuendos, is such a fascinating deconstruction of gay space, while his more petit, adjunct show at Southard Reid confirms Prem’s status as this season’s go-to guy for conceptual art.

As the name hints, Department Store Day is an occasion to recognise the retail powerhouses that have brought wealth to numerous nations from around the world. Obviously, this event has rather modern traditions and while these are a bit unclear, its roots seem to trace back at least until the end of the Second World War. While Department Store Day may not be as recognised as some other celebrations, its existence is nonetheless very real.
The main way to celebrate the occasion (from the point of view of a consumer) will be to visit one’s favourite department store, browse the aisles and pick out a gift or two. After all, contributing a bit of money back into the economy never hurts. If one is an employee, it could be worthwhile to ask for an extended lunch break. Still, if management has never heard of Department Store Day, the chances of enjoying a bit of free time may be slightly reduced!
Feral Cat Day was created by Alley Cat Allies who are a national advocacy organization dedicated to the humane treatment and the protection of feral cats. They were the first organisation to introduce the Trap-Neuter-Return method to control feral cat colonies in America.
By establishing and promoting standards of care, the organization has promoted the humane treatment of cats into the national spotlight. Their approach is now embraced by major cities and animal protection organizations all over the world. In 20 years the world now has a better understand and respect the lives of these feral cats.
Boss's Day is a secular holiday celebrated on October 16 (or the nearest working day) in the United States, Canada, Lithuania and Romania. This day was created for the purpose of strengthening the bond between employer and employee. Although the holiday is still controversial, it has become increasingly popular since its creation.
A day for lexicographers everywhere, Dictionary Day was founded to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Noah Webster – the father of the modern dictionary. Why not take the opportunity to learn some new words?
World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organisations concerned with food security, including the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
