We weren’t surprised when Republican presidential candidates tried to distance themselves and the anti-abortion community from Robert Lewis Dear, the man opened fire in a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs on Friday, killing three and injuring nine others.
But we were stunned with Ted Cruz told a reporter at a campaign stop today that Dear was actually a “transgendered [sic] leftist activist.”
Cruz was propagating a popular right-wing conspiracy that the disturbed murderer was trans because his voter registration ID listed him a female.
As Think Progress reports, there’s no evidence to support Dear was transgender, and the voter ID was most likely a clerical error.
Conservatives have been working feverishly to rewrite the narrative since Friday’s massacre became public: Some tried to suggest Dear was actually trying to rob a nearby Chase Bank when he entered the clinic, despite the fact that he uttered “no more baby parts.”
Demonizing LGBTs—and especially trans people—is a classic move by Republicans, who recently re-framed the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance as a free pass for men to barge into women’s bathrooms.
