Mike Enders and P-Town based artist Timscapes, famous for his duct tape designs,  have collaborated on a new campaign celebrating LGBTQ Elders and aging. A vibrant growing community that is often discriminated against at vulnerable times in their lives. “Not on my watch!” says Mike Enders, AXXIDENTAL founder (formerly Accidental Bear Website). Enders and Timscapes have created this new powerful image of a fist with variations of white, grey, and silver, with a classic, bold, and very recognizable Timscapes duct tape design. Buy yours HERE at the AXXIDENTAL Online Store. The campaign will be on-going, as should the conversation of LGBTQ Elders and Aging. All LGBTQ Elders and Aging are you and I.

People are now living longer than ever, so we need to start mapping out the road ahead and start preparing. We also need to be conscience and take care of those who have paved the way with blood, sweat, and tears for our LGBT lives today. Unfortunately many LGBT elders encounter discrimination, abuse, and isolation.

In the past decade there has been an increase in support and organizations for LGBT Youth, such as the Trevor Project, but Enders says he sees a lack of support, information, and conversation about LGBTQ Elders and their needs and lack of resources. What happens once LGBT people age out of youth programs?

To grab people’s attention, this campaign will be featuring a photo series of sexy men with white, silver, or grey hair representing a large part of the community that are vibrant, active, involved, strong, sexy, and opening new uncharted chapters of their lives. After the popularity explosion of “daddies’ within the gay community over the last few years, it only seems natural to further the conversation and go deeper. We want our “daddies” to be healthy body and mind.

The gay community has often been accused of being youth driven. There needs to be a shift in this thinking.

All LGBTQ Elders and Aging are you and I. We need to support and take care of each other. Different generation nee to learn and teach each other. We are determined to bring awareness and start conversations around the needs and discrimination still happening to our brothers, sisters, partners, parents, grandparents, and all loved ones.

Enders says that he is not at all ashamed of grabbing your attention with sexy photo shoots if its going to get you to click the link and once you are there on the page, you take a look of the information and conversation going on.” He himself said that, “Now that I am 44, as much as I want to take care of everyone in my community, I am thinking about my husband and my future. I know so many bad ass LGBT people with rocking, active, sex filled lives 50 and up. Yep, I said sex filled lives!”

 SAGE reports:

Our experience shows that the stigma and discrimination that many LGBT older people have experienced across the lifespan continues into their later years; many reside in settings where LGBT discrimination and bias are both routine and legal. Fearful of mistreatment from health care professionals and aging providers, many LGBT elders delay seeking care until their health deteriorates and crisis hits.

Recent estimates suggest that there are at least 1.5 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people 65 and older in the us, and this population will double by the year 2030. These figures are based on an estimate from UCLA’s Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and the Law

Many mainstream aging providers do not account for the unique realities and needs of lgbt older adults, leaving them at risk for isolation, neglect and discrimination. A recent national survey of LGBT older adults in long-term care facilities found that only 22% of respondents felt they could be open about their LGBT identities with facility staff, 89% predicted that staff would discriminate based on their sexual orientations and/or gender identities, and 43% reported instances of mistreatment.

Whether you are #SmartSexyStrongSilver or an admirer, join the conversation by wearing the shirt proud. $10 from every t-shirt sold will be donated to the fantastic organization doing amazing work for the LGBTQ Elder Community, SAGE (Service and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders).

SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, and provides training for aging providers and LGBT organizations, largely through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging. With offices in New York City, Washington, DC and Chicago, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 30 local SAGE affiliates in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

“What do duct tape, travel and bold colors have in common? Tim Convery.

Convery, a New York design veteran, left his job as Vice-President, Creative Director for a major cosmetics company, moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts in 2010 and rediscovered his creativity to produce “Tim-Scapes.” “

“Convery’s designs celebrate vintage travel posters utilizing his unique “Duct Type” typeface to create bold logos of over 50 American destinations. Each design is a colorful, geometric icon
highlighting a famous landmark that engages people to decipher the location. Convery’s art is also inspired by the minimal realism of Charley Harper and the vibrant work of Corita Kent. “
