When the kids have moved out and parents are left on their own they sometimes experience grief and loneliness or empty nest syndrome. Then they find new uses for the kids' rooms, including a craft room, a den or, excuse the visual, a "naked room" like the one enjoyed by Tripp's dad on "Failure to Launch." Crowded Nest Syndrome is on the opposite side of the spectrum.
When adult children move back in with their parents or in-laws, the nest suddenly becomes crowded. Sometimes it's the grandchildren who move in. "When returning offspring turn the empty nest into a crowded one, middle-aged couples don't seem to mind," according to Psychology Today.
