DC Comics’ “Love Is Love” Raises $165,000 For Pulse Survivors

The special-edition graphic novel will get a fifth printing

Love Is Love, an epic graphic novel honoring the victims and families of Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub attack, has now raised more than $165,000 from digital and print sales, Washington Post reports.

A collaboration between DC Comics and IDW Publishing, the 144-page graphic novel celebrates love in all forms.

The project, which debuted in December, was launched shortly after the June 12 attack by out comic writer Mark Andreyko, who has worked on Manhunter, Batwoman, and Wonder Woman ’77. It united the comic book community in support of those affected by the tragedy.

“I am overwhelmed by the response to Love is Love,” Andreyko said in a statement. “I never would have imagined that this project would not only raise so much money but touch so many lives.”

Proceeds from the book have been donated through Equality Florida to the OneOrlando Fund, which assists the victims and families impacted by the shooting.

“Events like this shouldn’t be compartmentalized,” Andreyko previously told the New York Times. “They should hurt and we should want to change for the better.”

“Equality Florida is so grateful for this project—it has been such an inspiring and powerful way to respond in the face of tragedy,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. “We must uproot the hatred that breeds discrimination and violence, and having top storytellers and illustrators combine their talents makes Love Is Love a potent and accessible tool.”

Those who donated their time and talent to Love Is Love include Phil Jimenez, Paul Jenkins, Matt Wagner, Olivier Coipel, Taran Killam, Patton Oswalt, Marguerite Bennett, Jim Lee, Grant Morrison, Gail Simone, Paul Dini, Amanda Conner, Scott Snyder, Tom King, Brian Michael Bendis, Steve Orlando, Cat Staggs, Kieron Gillen, Mark Millar, David Mack, Brad Meltzer, Damon Lindelof, Morgan Spurlock, and Matt Bomer.

Remaining copies of the graphic novel, which retails for $9.99 and is now in its fourth printing, will be donated to Equality Florida and sold as fundraising items. A fifth printing is forthcoming and will also benefit LGBT charities.

Love Is Love, which topped the New York Times bestseller list for graphic books, recently received a GLAAD Award nomination for outstanding comic.

Love Is Love is available online or at comic book stores. A special digital version available at Comixology features exclusive content.
