A week after the worst mass shooting in modern US history was committed in the gay nightclub Pulse, a man claiming to be the ex-lover of Omar Mateen has come forward and made multiple claims about his motives for the atrocity.
In an exclusive interview with Univision Noticias – in both Spanish and English – the man who was identified as Miguel said: “I’ve cried like you have no idea. But the thing that makes me want to tell the truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion he did it for revenge.”
Miguel [Not his real name] explained to anchor Maria Elena Salinas that he believed Mateen was angry after a man he had sex with later revealed he was HIV positive.
Speaking while wearing a disguise to protect his identity, the man recalled that he and Mateen had met on a gay hookup app, and had become “friends with benefits.” The pair had allegedly met between 15 and 20 times however, Miguel never learnt Mateen’s name.
“He adored Latinos, gay Latinos, with brown skin – but he felt rejected. He felt used by them – there were moments in the Pulse nightclub that made him feel really bad. Guys used him. That really affected him,” Miguel told Univision Noticias. “I believe this crazy horrible thing he did – that was revenge.”
Univision were unable to verify Miguel’s claims.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch told The Associated Press yesterday that despite the FBI investigation and witness statements, Mateen’s true motives for attacking the LGBT community might never be truly understood. “While we know a lot more about him in terms of who he was and what he did, I do not want to definitively rule out any particular motivation here,” she reasoned, later adding, “It’s entirely possible that he had a singular motive. It’s entirely possible that he had a dual motive.”
Ms Lynch did confirm however, that Mateen had accessed literature and extremist propaganda on the internet prior to the attack, commenting: “We believe that is certainly one avenue of radicalisation, but we want to know if there are others.
“We want to know everything he did in the days, weeks and months leading up to this attack.”
