An Indian marketplace app is hoping to inspire acceptance—and maybe change the country’s law against homosexuality—with a contest for same-sex couples.
UrbanClap, which provides services from package delivery to handymen and housekeepers in India, gave away free photo shoots to five LGBT couples who tagged UrbanClap on Facebook or use the hashtag #Comeoutforyourphotoshoot on Twitter.
“We believe that everyone should have the right to love whoever they want to, as it’s the most basic human right, yet denied to many,” UrbanClap co-founder Abhiraj Bhal said. “We firmly stand with the LGBT community in India as they fight for their equal rights in the eyes of law and society.”
The company also launched a video depicting a lesbian’s struggle with acceptance from her father.
She is seen posing for photos with her partner and then receiving the pictures, which ultimately get her father to accept her, through UrbanClap the next day.
Sadly, because of the law, UrbanApp assured users that the identities of the couples in the contest do not have to be made public. Only one couple—Vaibhav Dalal and Sukanth of Bengaluru—decided to go public.
“The reason for offering these photo shoots to same-sex couples was for them to be able to capture their moments together and create memories,” said an UrbanClap spokesperson.
“While we’re not saying people should use these to come out publicly, as many have chosen not to, but to share these moments with their close friends and family.”
