A UK-based gay men’s health charity decided to tackle the question in a new survey for FS Magazine.
The survey, assembled by Gay Men Fight Aids (GMFA), looked at responses from approximately 1,000 gay and bisexual male FS readers on the topics of porn consumption, health and sexual education. The hypothesis behind the survey was that because most schools in the UK do not provide comprehensive LGBT sex education, many within the community end up regarding porn as an educational tool.
The results supported the hypothesis, with 82% of readers reporting that they didn’t get any education about gay sex at school. Of this percentage, 41% of respondents said they learned about anal sex through porn with an additional 34% saying they learned about oral sex by watching porn.
When asked about the frequency with which they consumed porn, the majority (52%) said they watch porn a few times a week while 29% said they watch it every day. Of those who watch porn, most (40%) said they generally watch for 15 minutes or less while 33% said they typically watch for up to 30 minutes. Just 4% said they watched for more than an hour.
Of the types of porn they watch, the majority go for anal (88%) with bareback and oral coming in a close second at 71%. When asked if they feel guilty for watching porn, 72% of respondents said “No” with only 8% saying “Yes.”
