In an interview with the health site Stat News, Caitlyn Jenner made a surprising endorsement of de facto Republican nominee Donald Trump.
The former Olympian said she was “not excited with what Obama has done to the economy, to our Constitution, all that kind of stuff,” but admitted that when it came to trans issues Democrats “have actually been very good.”
But then Jenner pivoted and praised Trump’s record on both women’s rights and LGBT issues.
“Everybody looks at the Democrats as being better with these issues. But Trump seems to be very much for women,” she said. “He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue. He backed the LGBT community.”
She ended by admitting “there’s a lot more unknowns” when it comes to the business mogul. “With Hillary, you pretty much know what you’re gonna get with the LGBT community.”
“Unknown” is a fair assessment of Trump’s stances: He once said trans people “should use the bathroom they feel is appropriate,” but later said “I don’t know” when asked the same question.
And he’s alternately said marriage equality was a done deal and declared he would work to undo it.
