College is a place for exploration and experimentation, so it’s no surprise that many universities are LGBT friendly. But not all schools are created equal: Campus Pride just released a report card for 194 colleges in the U.S., judging each on “inclusive, welcoming and respectful” it was.
Scores were calculated based on self-reported information regarding LGBT-friendly policies, programs and practices—giving each campus a ranking out of five.
The University of Pennsylvania, Harvey Mudd College, Indiana University At Bloomington, Montclair State, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Tufts, University of Washington, Ithaca, and Rutgers at News Brunswick all received a perfect five.”
On the other end, Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Los Angeles Southwest College, and Cornell College all got one star, while Nicholls State in Louisiana received a 1.5 rating.
“As time goes on, the needs of LGBTQ college and university students change,” said Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride and creator of the Campus Pride Index. “Therefore, we have updated our Campus Pride Index assessment to reflect that, with higher standards for campuses and a higher focus on trans and gender nonconforming students.”
