A Facebook post by the Anglican Parish of Gosford in Australia urging Christians to “get over” people being gay has gone viral.
Father Rod Bower posted the photo of the church’s sign which reads:
“Dear Christians, Some people are gay — get over it. Love, God.”
Within 24 hours, it had more than 100,000 hits.
“Normally one of my posts might get a few thousand views, but nothing like this,” Father Bower told the Daily Telegraph. “This has gone international now — there are people liking it all over the world and it is just a little sign in Gosford.”
Naturally, there have been a few negative comments but the feedback has been otherwise overwhelmingly positive.
“I have had a number of phone calls and ran into people who have said, ‘Good on you this is really great’,” he said, adding, “Marriage equality is a hot issue at the moment and it seems the church is struggling to get over this issue.”
Father Bower and his holy sense of humor have taken the form of other pithy proverbs, such as: “Dear Christians, I still love you in spite of what some of you say I did to my son. Love, God” and “Dear Christians, I don’t have a plan. Scary isn't it? Love, God.” For Father Bower, it’s just a way of “reflecting on what the spirit of God might be saying in a modern world.”
Meanwhile, the spirit of God is a sassy little so-and-so, isn't she?
