Zac Efron has played a lot of different roles but serial killer hasn’t been one of them. Well, that is until now. According to a report on Variety, the 29-year old celeb has agreed to take on the part of the notorious Ted Bundy.
The name of the film is: Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and has actually been in the works since 2014, according to its official IMDb file.
Voltage Pictures will be producing the film and the first pictures will be taken as part of principle photography will occur on October 9. The Variety report states that “Voltage will fully finance and is handling international sales at the Cannes Film Festival. CAA and UTA Independent Film Group represent the domestic rights.”
For those who may not know, Ted Bundy was a serial killer, kidnapper, rapist, burglar, and necrophile who assaulted and murdered numerous young women and girls back in the 1970s, and perhaps earlier.
Just before his execution in 1989 via execution – after more than a decade of denials—Bundy confessed to 30 killings across seven states between the years 1974 and 1978. The true victim count remains unknown, and many think the number is much higher. Many books on the psychopath killer have been written, including Kevin Sullivan’s, The Bundy Murders.
Efron’s role as Ted Bundy would be a departure from some of his more recent work where he has played a muscled up frat guy in films that focus on mindless beef and brawn (i.e. Baywatch). An article in May of 2016 said that it would be good for the popular actor to consider variation when taking on parts to avoid being typecast.
A quick look at some of his movies over the past several years shows a pattern that some feel needs to be broken if he hopes to make a transition:
Neighbors
Dirty Grandpa
We are your friends
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Baywatch
In 2013, Efron did appear in the independent film, Parkland, where he took on the part of a physician in a movie about the events that transpired on November 22, 1963 – the day President Kennedy was assassinated. The movie, however, did not get much attention.
Should Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile become a success, it may help the star pivot towards more serious roles in the future.
