It’s been 21 years since Showgirls first thrusted onto the screens and became a cult classic, and now the erotic drama is finally getting the restoration it so rightly deserves.
Pathe Films has remastered the Elizabeth Berkley vehicle and is re-releasing it in theaters-but sadly only in France.
“I don’t think that it’s a movie that could ever be made anymore. Ever,” director Paul Verhoeven told Rolling Stone last year for the film’s 20th anniversary. “Because nudity is more taboo than ever in the United States. You see these movies and the sex scenes are reduced to a couple of dissolves where you see a hand on a back, but there are really no sex scenes in American movies anymore. There are exceptions, of course. But not many.”
Verhoeven stands by the film, calling it, “the most elegant movie I’ve ever done” and says it is more “anti-erotic than erotic.” After Showgirls Verhoeven went onto direct other panned movies like Starship Troopers and Hollow Man.
The new 4K scan remastered version will hit theaters and Blu-ray on September 14 in France, and hopefully a U.S. release will follow. Watch the NSFW trailer for the re-release below:
