The Tom Hanks classic Splash is the latest film to be getting a Hollywood remake, but this one comes with a twist.
Channing Tatum is set to play the mermaid character that was first made famous by Daryl Hannah in the 1984 original, while Workaholics’ Jillian Bell will take on the Tom Hanks role.
Imagine partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer are also returning to the Disney project, after having helped write and direct the first movie 32 years ago.
The original starred Hanks as a man who reunites with the mermaid who saved him from drowning as a boy, eventually falling in love with her.
Bell, who previously worked with Tatum on 22 Jump Street, was reportedly the first to pitch the idea for the gender-swapped remake.
The project is said to still be in the very early stages of development, but we’ll definitely be waiting for our first glimpse of Tatum splashing around in nothing but a pair of fins in the near future.
