Are There Too Many Labels For Sexuality?

The panel of a new talk show called "30ish" addresses the sensitivity surrounding sexuality in 2016.

A new show from Black Hollywood Live is taking a look at issues affecting people in their 30s, including the growing list of labels used to define sexuality.

Openly gay host Tony Moore, the creator of the new series 30ish, tried to explain to the rest of the panel what terms like “pansexual” and “queer” mean, but ultimately said he wished it didn’t have to be this complicated.

“If you’re attracted to someone and you can see beyond gender, and you can just love that person for who they are and still be sexual with that person or have a relationship, just be with that person,” he said. “I feel like everyone has to put a label on something.”

The panel also addressed a proposed policy in North Carolina to have schools use neutral language and to not refer to kids as boys and girls, but as students and scholars instead.

“We are not genderless, we are not colorless,” said co-host Maria Provenzano. “We are humans and we have to appreciate the different parts of each other, and I think it’s ridiculous.”

Moore created 30ish for this very reason — to have a panel of people from different backgrounds, races and sexual identities in various stages of their 30s share their differing opinions.

“As I researched talk shows, I noticed that most were geared towards women and included an all female panel,” said Moore. “I wanted to create a show where different types of people were featured, where men and women of all different backgrounds could have their voices and opinions heard.”
