Gay men have traditionally been ostracized by heteronormative communities for not being “manly” enough, but are we actually MORE masculine than our straight counterparts? That’s the theory put forth by Gregory Brown in the newest ASAPScience video.
If masculinity is about validation from other men, Brown suggests, that gay men “are still looking for approval from other men quite constantly and, therefore by definition… are hyper-masculine.”
Of course, some would define masculinity as a set standard of behaviors and interests—sports, women, Donald Trump—which queer men may not align with.
It’s a fascinating idea to think about—as Brown also delves into the whole “masc4masc” culture, homophobia as veiled sexism, and other bountiful topics.
