Mental health campaigner Jonny Benjamin has launched a new campaign to tackle the mental health issues many still face in today’s society.
In a touchingly honest new video – titled #IAmAMan – Benjamin can be seen openly discussing the various parts of his personality, physical appearance and health issues that leave him feeling most insecure.
From his physical appearance and mental health, to his sexuality and digestive system, the clip sees Benjamin – describe the things that he feels most self conscious about.
“I want to do something to get men talking. 13 men take their own lives each day in UK but I know we can change this,” Benjamin – who says the government’s current to mental health as ‘diabolical’ – told PinkNews.
He added that gay men are often most at risk from mental health issues, often leading to self harm and suicide.
“In a recent survey by Stonewall it was found that young gay men are 6 times more likely to self-harm or to take their own lives,” he explained.
“This is extremely worrying and something that needs to be urgently addressed. Through my recent works in schools and prisons lots of men have told me they feel it’s difficult to show vulnerability.
“I made this latest video about my own vulnerabilities as a vehicle to hopefully help other men to open up and be less afraid of their insecurities,” he added.
“If it helps just one person then it is more than worth it.”
A recent survey found that 24% of gay men admitted to trying to kill themselves, while 54% admitted to having suicidal thoughts.
A further 70% said low self-esteem was the main reason for their depression and suicidal thoughts.

Please be okay with who you are. I was 57 years old before I had the courage to admit I am a gay man. I was my own worst impediment to being out. In some countries this is still a problem. My biggest regret is that I didn't come out sooner. Love yourself enough to be yourself.I am on older fat bear with not as much hair on my body as I would like. My life is so much better today. I look forward to meeting other people and new experiences every day. Big hugs to all of you struggling in your life. Steve
