Maroon 5 has joined the chorus of musicians addressing North Carolina’s HB2, announcing they’ve canceled upcoming shows in Charlotte and Raleigh because of the transphobic law that denies basic decency.
On their website, the band announced their decision to nix their September 11 and 12 shows.
We have announced that we will be canceling our upcoming shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina because of the recent passage of the HB2 legislation. This was a difficult decision for us to make as a band.We don’t want to penalize our fans in North Carolina by not performing for them, but in the end it comes down to what we feel is morally right AS WE FEEL EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED EQUALLY.
Maroon 5 has been a longtime ally to the LGBT community—and not just because Levine’s brother, Michael, is gay. They join Bruce Springsteen, Itzhak Perlman, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato and other artists in canceling shows in North Carolina until the law is repealed.
Other acts, including Cyndi Lauper and Duran Duran, are playing in the state but drawing attention to HB2 during their shows.
