Several days after Rosie O’Donnell’s adopted daughter Chelsea was found at the New Jersey home of Steven Sheerer, a 25-year-old previously charged with heroin possession, Sheerer was arrested and charged on Friday with third-degree allegations of child endangerment and distribution of obscenity to a minor. On Monday, prosecutors detailed the charges.
The Associated Press reports prosecutors now allege that Sheerer sent Chelsea a nude photo. O’Donnell’s daughter was 17 when she was reported missing and found, days later, at Sheerer’s home. Authorities have told press that Chelsea arrived at the house by bus, and did not want to leave the home when they arrived.
The AP also reports that O’Donnell gave authorities permission to search her daughter’s cell phone. Sheerer’s Friday evening arrest reportedly came hours after authorities found “inappropriate communications” between Sheerer and Chelsea. According to the same report, police also “seized a computer and other digital equipment at Sheerer’s home when they executed a search warrant.” No information about findings on Sheerer’s equipment has been released.
Last week, the patrolman who located O’Donnell’s daughter, Nicholas Dapuzzo, told Page Six that Sheerer and Chelsea “met through Tinder sometime in July.” Since the Page Six story, Tinder has issued the following statement:
“This is a very upsetting situation. . .We have security measures in place to help verify each user's authenticity. . . . Users age 13 - 17 can only connect with other users in that same age range on Tinder. If we learn that a user has lied about their age in order to interact with users outside of their appropriate age group, we delete their profile immediately.”
According to the AP, Sheerer’s “bail was set at $40,000 cash, and he faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
