On March 22, 1982, Congress declared the day to be "International Day of the Seal." This special day was founded to raise awareness for and stop the cruelty towards seal populations around the globe.
In the U.S. seals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) which was enacted a decade earlier, in 1972. "The MMPA prohibits, with certain exceptions, the 'take' of marine mammals in U.S. waters and by U.S. citizens on the high seas, and the importation of marine mammals and marine mammal products into the U.S."
