People were aware that smoking was not the healthiest of habits but it wasn't until the 1950s that scientists made a connection between lung cancer and cigarette smoking according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. On Jan. 11, 1964, U.S. Surgeon General Luther Terry made history. He was the first to issues a government report stating "smoking may be hazardous to one's health" in the report, "Smoking and Health: Report of the Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General of the United States." The report also stated there was suggestive evidence that smoking caused "emphysema, cardiovascular disease, and various types of cancer."
