Angela Lansbury is coming to Cherry Tree Lane!
The beloved stage and screen icon has officially joined the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins.
Lansbury joins an already star-studded cast that includes Emily Blunt as Mary, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Dick Van Dyke, and Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin, Topsy.
In the new film, “Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family… and uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”
Rob Marshall (Chicago) is helming the musical while Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) will provide the songs.
There aren’t any details on Lansbury’s role except that she will play a character called “Balloon Lady”—perhaps someone who can be found in the park by the Banks’ residence?
Maybe we should get Jessica Fletcher on the case to find out more details.
But don’t get out your parrot head umbrella to fly over to your local theater just yet. Mary Poppins Returns isn’t slated to be released until Christmas Day 2018.
Plenty of time to prepare ourselves for Lansbury’s return to the Disney-verse.
