As we get closer to the release of the new Beauty and the Beast Live Action film, most of us expect the movie to be a major hit. Because of that, we’re even more surprised that this latest news has come out.
Director Bill Condon has announced that there will be an “exclusively gay moment” in the film.
Specifically, it has come out that the LeFou character, played by Josh Gad, will be a gay character and crushing on his best friend/boss Gaston who’s played by Luke Evans (who’s ironically gay).
Condon revealed this information during an interview with Attitude magazine.
In the interview he stated, “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston. He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings,” Condon says. “And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”
In response, the actor Josh Gad said on twitter that he was “beyond proud” of the fact that he’s playing a character that will mean so much to the LGBT community, both big and small.

Making LeFou gay isn’t much of a change for the character. After all, most of us sensed gay vibes from the original cartoon in the first place.
It seems though that lately Disney is trying to do a lot in terms of representation for LGBT people, but their most recent attempts are becoming bolder.
Specifically, Disney had earlier success representing LGBT people in its tv and animation sectors such as having lesbian parents in the show Good Luck Charlie and a gay couple in the cartoon Gravity Falls.
Adding to that, several recent Disney films held rumors of same-sex couples being included as extras such as Finding Dory and Zootopia.
Plus, there was the whole #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend discussion. (Because let’s be honest, Chris Evans is great to look at and Captain America does spend a lot of time with his pal Bucky).
Besides Beauty and the Beast however, the latest moment for LGBT representation in Disney was the cartoon Star vs. The Forces of Evil in which the main characters went to a concert and were surrounded by kissing couples (both straight and gay).
Between this first gay kiss on Disney screens and this upcoming gay character in what is sure to be a blockbuster hit, it seems Disney is all in for LGBT representation. And they’re proud of it.
