Trump Names Anti-LGBT Senator Jeff Sessions As Attorney General

Sessions was denied a judgeship 30 years ago amid allegations of racism.

Donald Trump is finalizing an official announcement naming Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as his choice for Attorney General, reports The New York Times.

In 1986, President Reagan tapped Session to be a federal judge, but his nomination was killed in the Senate Judiciary Committee amid allegations of racism.

An assistant DA when Sessions was Attorney General of Alabama testified Sessions called him “boy” on multiple occasions and declared the ACLU and NAACP were “un-American.”

He also testified Sessions said the Ku Klux Klan was okay “until I found out they smoked pot,” a comment Sessions insisted was a joke.

Ironically, since joining Congress a decade later, Sessions has served on the judiciary committee himself and worked to block President Obama’s three nominees to the Supreme Court.

As senator, Sessions also opposed the Affordable Care Act and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act, and voted for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

After the Republican National Convention in July, Sessions told the Washington Examiner that Donald Trump’s position on the LGBT community “was perfectly legitimate” and agreed Americans should not be targeted for violence because of their sexual orientation.

Already a close Trump advisor, Sessions has proposed canceling federal funds to sanctuary cities and challenging the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship.
