On the fourth and final night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump accepted the Republican nomination for President of the United States.
Trump’s speech-which was over an hour in length-he brought up his usual campaign issues like building a wall to stop illegal immigration, and the many weaknesses of Hillary Clinton, but in his speech he also unexpectedly mentioned the LGBT community when talking about terrorism:
“Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. This time, the terrorist targeted [the] LGBTQ community. No good. And we’re going to stop it. As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology. Believe me.”
The crowd erupted into cheers and-Trump-in an unscripted moment-thanked them for their response: “And I have to say, as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said. Thank you.”
His remarks came at the end of an already historic night when Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel became only the third out person to speak at the Republican National Convention.
