The Highlights (And Hot Guys) Of This Year’s Bingham Cup Tournament

The world's finest gay ruggers battled it out in Nashville this weekend.
From: NewNowNext
More than 40 gay-inclusive rugby leagues descended on Nashville, Tennessee this weekend to battle for bragging rights at the Bingham Cup — a biennial event that brings together the world’s finest gay-inclusive rugby leagues to find out who’s best.

International teams included the Amsterdam Lowlanders, the Toronto Muddy York, the Stockholm Berserkers, the Manchester Village Spartans and the Sydney Convicts, while some stateside favorites included the Atlanta Bucks, New York Gotham Knights, the Dallas Lost Souls, the San Francisco Fog, and the Chicago Dragons.

The teams played in blistering heat and humidity all weekend, but it was two Australian leagues that made it to the final round.

According to Sydney’s Star Observer, the Melbourne Chargers came out on top of the grand finale match with a score of 20-7 over the Sydney Convicts. The paper reported the winning team held a steady lead over their opponents for a majority of the match.

“It’s a moment to be relished by anybody who has ever pulled on the jersey, fundraised, supported, volunteered, or contributed in any way,” said Chargers club founder Ben Lancken. “I couldn’t be prouder… eight years and we’ve done it.”

“It was amazing to win the Bingham Cup,” added Chargers President Dan Syrus. “Everyone played out of their skins over the three days in blistering heat and humidity. The Sydney Convicts played well and we’re proud that the cup remains in Australia.”

This weekend marked the first time in six years that the Bingham Cup, named after Mark Bingham, a gay rugby player who helped defend United Airlines Flight 93 from terrorist hijackers on September 11, 2001, was held in America.

The next tournament is scheduled to take place in either Amsterdam, Edinburgh, London or Toronto in 2018.
