Clarence is a Cartoon Network series about a rambunctious 8 year-old boy named Clarence, his best friend Jeff, and their tight-knit group of friends. What makes this cartoon stand out is that Jeff’s parents are a lesbian couple voiced by two famous lesbians, Lea Delaria (Orange is the New Black) and comedian Tig Notaro.
Jeff’s moms, EJ and Sue (Lea and Tig, respectively) have only appeared in a few episodes, making their debut appearance in the 2014 episode “Jeff Wins,” when Jeff wants to enter the local cook off.
After Ellen reports that “in a flashback montage of years past, EJ and Sue are pictured together in support of Jeff, camera in hand to capture the winning moments, and always with different style choices, especially Sue with her radically queer short ‘dos.”
There has never been any drama made about Jeff having two moms. In fact the women are friends with the town mayor and participate in school and local activities just like any other couple.
This isn’t the first time that Clarence has included a nod to its queer viewers. In an episode from 2014 two men meeting at a restaurant were supposed to kiss on the mouth, but Cartoon Network censored the kiss, instead opting to have the two men kiss on the cheek.
“Originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth,” said series writer Spencer Rothbell when a fan asked how hard it was to show gay couples on the cable network.
Hopefully EJ and Sue will get more screen time in upcoming seasons.
Clarence is currently in its second season.
