A women’s bathroom at a Target in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, was rocked by an explosion on Wednesday, though no one was inside at the time.
A plastic bottle may have been used as part of the bomb, Evanston Police Commander Joe Dugan told WGN TV, but the actual damage was minimal.
An unnamed 44-year-old woman has been taken into custody as a person of interest in the case, but authorities are still investigating whether the bomb is connected to protesting targeting the retail chain’s pro-trans bathroom policy.
“The detectives are not currently looking for any known additional suspects, and [at] this point there is no indication that the incident is related to any policies that the Target store has in place,” said a spokesperson.
Since Target announced it was letting transgender employees and customers use facilities that match their gender identity, more than one million people have signed a petition saying they’d boycott the store.
Demonstrators have made scenes both inside and outside Target locations, and June 4 was announced as a national “Don’t Target Our Children Day,” just four days before the bomb attack.
