Artist Robert de Michiell's pop-culture illustrations have been a staple of Entertainment Weekly and many other publications. He was about to enjoy being exhibited at ClampArt Gallery (531 W. 25th St., NYC) in a show called On Fire Island, but sadly, he lost his long fight with cancer this week.
The show will go on, even though de Michiell's journey has come to an end.
A statement from his representative follows:
Robert de Michiell died today peacefully at home with his husband Jeffrey Wilson by his side. The show of Robert's Fire Island art at ClampArt will go on as planned tomorrow (October 13) in memory of a uniquely gifted illustrator who was also a kind and gentle spirit.
Robert courageously fought cancer until the very end. He knew there was a chance he might not be able to attend the exhibit, but his presence will be felt strongly through his family, friends and work. He recently said, “These paintings symbolize my love for Fire Island and the friendships I've made there through the years. As we head into fall, I'm so glad these pieces are being shown together, allowing us all one last glimpse of summer's magic.Robert de Michiell was 57.”
