The Wrap is reporting exclusively that Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett has been tapped to star in an authorized biopic film about the life of Lucille Ball that will be written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. The film will feature involvement by Ball‘s children, Lucy Arnaz Jr. and Desi Arnaz Jr., and will focus on her 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz. Although not an original story, per se, I am completely in love with the idea of telling Lucille Ball‘s story in a serious biopic film. She remains, undoubtedly, one of the greatest comic actors of the past century and remains an absolute inspiration to fans of her work. Cate as Lucy just sounds so perfect, I’m shocked that no one thought of the casting before now.
Cate Blanchett is attached to star in an authorized biopic of Hollywood legend Lucille Ball that Aaron Sorkin is set to write for Escape Artists, TheWrap has learned. The film will chronicle Ball’s 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, with whom she starred on the classic TV sitcom “I Love Lucy.” Ball had two children with Arnaz before they divorced in 1960. She married Gary Morton the following year. Lucy Arnaz Jr. and Desi Arnaz Jr. will produce with Escape Artists, whose executive Jenna Block will oversee development of the project on behalf of the Sony-based company. A representative for Blanchett declined to comment, while a representative for Sorkin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
I grew up watching reruns of I Love Lucy with my mom so Lucille Ball will forever hold a special place in my heart. In high school, I became obsessed with biographies and fondling remember reading about Lucille‘s life outside of the TV show she was famous for. It’s easy to understand why everyone remembers her as the Lucy Ricardo from I Love Lucy but she was far more interesting than that. I am so excited by the idea of a serious biopic film about her life, with Cate Blanchett as the lead, I can’t even tell you. I really hope this movie comes to light because it’s got Oscar buzz written all over it in mere concept alone. I’m going to keep my eye on this story. Hopefully there will be more concrete news to update soon.
