“God Help the Outcasts”
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
How it relates: In one of Esmerelda’s most poignant moments from the Hunchback, she doesn’t know if God will hear her pray because of what religion says about her ~lifestyle~. When you are in the closet, you can’t escape some tension when it comes to the topic of religion. That tension can be strong enough to keep you in the closet.
Takeaway lyric:
“I don’t know if you can hear me
Or if you’re even there
I don’t know if you would listen
To a gypsie’s prayer
Yes, I know I’m just an outcast
I shouldn’t speak to you
Still I see your face and wonder
Were you once an outcast too?”
