Martina Navratilova
Tennis
She’s arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time: Before her retirement from professional tennis in 2006, Martina Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and 31 Grand Slam doubles titles, and remains the only player—male or female—in to hold on to the Number One ranking for more than 200 weeks.
And for most of her brilliant tennis career she was an out gay woman.
Navratilova came out publicly as a lesbian in 1981, when it was unheard of, and has remained a staunch advocate for the LGBT community ever since. In a recent essay for Sports Illustrated, Navratilova had this message for fellow gay athletes: Come out. “It is beautiful out here and I guarantee you this—you will never, ever want to go back. You will only wonder why it took so long.”
