I’ve often ragged on the pop music of the 90′s for being an arid desert devoid of fun, but there were bright spots, including these 50 songs, which should have performed better on the charts. Like The 100 Greatest Lost Hits Of The 80′s countdown, this list is very female-centric (what can I say, I like rock chicks), but hopefully, some of these pop gems may trigger a long dormant memory.
#50
“Only Love (The Ballad Of Sleeping Beauty)” Sophie B. Hawkins
My ardor for Sophie cooled a bit when she aligned herself with GOProud, but I eventually chalked it up to her kookiness. She hit the top ten twice in the 90′s, with “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover,” and “As I Lay Me Down,” and I think her 1996 release “Only Love” should have scored bigger, but it floundered on the Billboard Hot 100 at #49. She’s playing the xylophone, people. Xylophone.
