MARCEL AUS BERLIN

Butthead of the Month
Photography by Benjamin Alexander Huseby
Interview by Zac Bayly
23-year-old Marcel from Berlin isn't a rocker (he likes minimal techno, actually), but that doesn't stop him from keeping his locks long — or keep people from cracking Jesus jokes when they run into him in the street. In fact, when it comes to hair length, he wouldn't mind going back to the sixties when guys just let it grow. And he’s not just talking about the hair on your head, Marcel likes his men hairy all over, or as he puts it, ‘anywhere and everywhere’.

Zac: How long have you been growing your hair?
Marcel: Well, I started when I was 15 or 16 years old…
When was the last time you cut your hair?
I cut it once when I was about seventeen or eighteen. People were telling me that I would look so good with short hair, but I tried it and I didn't like it. I had to grow it again. I don’t want to do that again — I’m really happy with how it is right now.

Do you feel spiritual with long hair?

I don’t feel very spiritual. Sometimes, when I walk barefoot on the street, I hear that I look like Jesus. But there are lots of people who don’t wear shoes in Berlin, especially young people on the train or subway.
Have you ever slammed it in a car door, for example?
No, I haven’t!
How do you keep your hair out of your eyes?
I put it behind my ears. If my hair get’s messy and I want to go out, I just tie it up and I’m ready to go.
How often do you wash your hair?
Maybe twice a week? It’s a lot of work. If I want to go out afterwards then I have to blow-dry it and that takes a lot of time. But blow-drying is really bad for your hair, I don’t do it often. I rely on the air and it takes like four hours, so I can lose the rest of a day waiting for my hair to dry. I set aside two afternoons a week to do it.
Does your hair smell if you don’t wash it that regularly?
No, and it also doesn't get greasy. I’m very lucky with that. I can not wash it for days and it’s still looking nice. It’s definitely healthier for your hair to wash it less. It’s not such an issue if you have shorter hair.
What’s the longest you've ever gone without washing your hair?
Two weeks… That was on a long trip through India. I didn't need to because I was dirty all over anyway.
Do you use any special products in your hair?

I just use silicone-free shampoo — that’s supposed to be healthier for your hair — and I use coconut oil so that it doesn't dry out. Sometimes I put coconut oil into my hair overnight and really let it get into the hair, and then I wash it out the next day. It makes it smooth as a baby’s ass. It looks like an advertisement for shampoo and it smells good too!

About three bottles of shampoo. Coconut oil… I don’t use that much. I’m not dripping in oil.
How many bottles of shampoo and coconut oil do you go through every month?
Do you use a special brand of shampoo?
Yes, I use this brand called Alverde, which is all-natural. You can get it in most Berlin drugstores.
Do you ever shake your hair out after swimming, like Pamela Anderson in Baywatch?
Yeah! I find that sexy. Long hair is so sexy when it’s wet. Well, I find it sexy. Like in that ‘Doctor No’ when Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder comes out of the water and walks up the beach… I love wet hair!
Do you ever get split ends?
Oh yeah, I just trim the ends every two months or so. I have to do it, or it looks really dry, but I always cut the least amount possible. It just takes a few minutes.
Have you ever had cornrows or permed your hair?
No, I haven’t. I don’t do many crazy things with my hair. I have a friend who’s very good at braiding. She did a ring around my head, where you put the three braids of hair together. I looked like a Japanese warrior.
Does having long hair make it easier to come up with costumes for costume parties?
Yeah. I’m actually from Cologne where we have a carnival tradition, so every year I dress up as something else. Last year, I was a pirate.
Do you ever wear bandannas or hats?
Actually, I can never find hats that fit. I have a lot of hair on my head, which makes it hard to wear one.
Do you brush your hair everyday?
Not every day. Just after washing it, so every few days. It doesn't look very good when I brush it because I have curly hair, and when you brush it out, it looks like a big bush.
Do you use a special brush?
I use a comb that has wide gaps between the teeth. It’s made from wood, not plastic. Plastic combs have these sharp edges that can tear the hair — I saw that on a show where women with very long hair talk about their hair. I've also visited forums on the internet where people talk about long hair maintenance. You know, like what brands of shampoo they use…
Are you attracted to other men with long hair?
I wouldn't say that I’m especially attracted to long-haired guys, but if a nice one comes a long, I wouldn't say no. Maybe two years ago, I was seeing a guy who had beautiful long hair, and we got some looks when we walked through the city together.
Do you feel more confident when the wind is blowing in your hair?
Oh yeah, I definitely do! As long as it’s not blowing from the back, because that’s very annoying.
Do you manscape at all?
I let it grow everywhere and I like it. I really like when guys are hairy anywhere and everywhere. The hairiest guy I've been with was from Syria. He was very hairy. He had hair all over his chest, all over his butt, and anywhere else you can think of. I really like body hair. I don’t understand why everyone is trimming and shaving it.
Have you seen the musical, Hair?
Yeah. Actually, my current boyfriend used to be in a production of Hair in Canada.
Have you ever given him a hairjob? Like, a handjob with hair?
I've never heard of that! I don’t think it would be so comfortable. It might be a bit itchy…
Have you ever had cum or gum in your hair?
No never.
Of the four kinds of hair — straight, wavy, curly and frizzy — which ones would you marry, fuck and kill?
I would marry wavy hair, I would fuck curly hair, and I would kill straight hair. I really don’t like straight hair…
Do you have to put your hair into a ponytail when you’re giving head?
Yes! That’s the one thing that is really annoying. Sex is hard with long hair.
What’s your favorite hair color?
Blonde hair — and red hair. I’m kind of into ginger guys. I’m lucky to be brunette. It suits me.
You know how some people look similar to their dogs? What breed of dog would you pick to match your hair?
Maybe I would get one of those dogs that are a bit like a greyhound, but with really long hair.
You’re talking about the dog breed that kind of looks like Cher, right?
Yeah! That’s the one.
That would be an Afghan… What would it take for you to cut off your hair entirely?
To shave it all off? I would do it for a lot of money, like a million or maybe a couple hundred thousand. That would really change my life. I wouldn't have to work anymore…
What about €50,000?
That is a lot of money, but I wouldn't do it for €50,000. If they can pay €50,000, they can pay €100,000. I would start thinking about it for €100,000.
What if someone stole your Cher dog and the ransom was your hair?
Maybe then I would think about it.
