BUTTHEAD OF THE MONTH

DAVID FROM ALASKA
Text by Zac Bayly

No, that's not the latest Galliano millinery...
It's David's father's Yupik beaver hat.

28-year-old David is a hunky, indigenous Alaskan dude from Bethel, a rather isolated town only accessible by air and water about 400 miles west of Anchorage. Luckily David’s got a nice layer of fur to keep him warm in that subarctic climate which suits him fine as he is super outdoorsy and loves winter sports. When he isn’t playing around in the snow, he’s probably helping his two gay dads run their B&B. One chilly morning, I caught up with him via Skype to chat about the local gay scene, his ancestral roots and manscaping.

Zac: It’s 6:30 A.M. there and you’re wide awake. Are you an early bird?
David: I’m working at my dads’ bed and breakfast, so I’m used to being up this early. I’m taking care of business while they’re on vacation. They’ve owned it for like, ten years.
Is that what do you do for a living?
I’ve done a lot of things… I used to work on an oil rig, as a cook, but I’ve retired from cooking. I used to cook for about one hundred and eighty people at a time, which was too stressful. I also do freelance photography at different events.
What’s living in Alaska like?
It’s one of the best places on earth. There’s a lot to do here if you’re optimistic and okay with the weather. The winter is crazy. Last week, it was raining and forty-five degrees, this week it’s snowing. I like to go cross-country skiing and snowboarding. I like to go ice skating. There are indoor soccer clubs here too.

Are you very fit?
Yeah, I’m going to the gym every day.
So you’re quite muscular?
Yeah.
Show me your abs… Oh yeah, you’re good. Do you like guys that are as hairy as you?
Oh yeah, I like hair. Hairy is so sexy because when you’re next to the person you can pull their hair to stimulate them a little bit.
Do you shave anywhere?
I trim. Just in the nether regions. I shaved everywhere once, but it was such a big job…
What kind of guys do you go for?
I like guys that are active and take care of themselves. I look for someone who’s spontaneous — who would just pack up and go camping — someone who’s funny and outgoing and likes to crack jokes. I’ve always been attracted to guys with accents, English and Australian accents especially. I’m single right now, but I’m not really looking.
What’s it like being gay in Alaska?
It’s fine for me. I was adopted at the age of two by a heterosexual couple, but then my dad came out of the closet when I was seventeen. He has been with the same partner ever since.
Are you Inuit?
I’m Athabaskan and Yupik. There are five different types of Alaska Native that correspond with different regions, and the Athabaskan and Yupik are in the interior. I also came out when I was seventeen. I actually have an identical twin brother who just came out.

Wow! How similar are you two in terms of personality?
He’s pretty funny and witty — just like me. We have our differences, but we have plenty of similarities. He carves native masks for a living…
Is everything the same, physically?
Yes.
You’re not shy, are you?
No! I’m quite comfortable with myself.
I’m going to see if I can make you blush… Do you prefer to be top or bottom?
I like to go with the flow. I like to be versatile and spontaneous.
Does size matter to you?
No, personality does. You have to have chemistry.
Totally. Cut or uncut?
I like cut. I’m cut. I don’t know if I’ve ever really experienced an uncut cock. Maybe a couple of times, but not that often.
What does your cock look like?
It’s pretty long. It swings to the left when it’s, you know…
Erect?
Uh-huh… I have to be quiet because there are other people in the house. I’m sitting in the living room.
Have you ever had sex with another Native American?
Yeah, it was a one-night-stand. He was a mix between black and Native Alaskan. He was amazing!
Have you had sex outdoors?
Well, that time we were at his house. I have had sex outdoors before — once on a hiking trail. I had to keep an eye out to make sure no one was coming.
Do you know much about Alaska Native culture?
Since I was adopted at the age of two, I wasn’t raised in a village. I do know quite a bit about the culture because I used to work in the Alaska Native Heritage Center where they have storytelling, exhibitions and an outdoor museum that shows how Alaska Natives lived.
If you were raised in a more traditional village, how do you think they would have reacted to you being gay?
Honestly, I know some gay Alaska Native people. Back in the seventeenth century or so, the Russian Orthodox religion was introduced… They weren’t very keen on gay people, but things have changed.
Are there gay bars nearby?
There’s one true gay bar called Mad Myrna’s in Anchorage. Sometimes I go out and end up having a one-night stand, but I’m not like, out all the time, prowling. If I have too many one-night stands, I feel weird. It’s fine if it happens spontaneously and naturally, but if I’m constantly looking for it, I start to feel like I’m not being true to myself.
