‘Sologamy’ is a growing trend for singles who want to marry themselves

From: Queerty
Opponents of same-sex marriage warned us that if gay people were ever allowed to marry, it would open the floodgates and pretty soon people would start marrying everything from their pets to their family members to inanimate objects.

Well, it looks like that self-fulfilling prophecy is finally coming true.

Sologamy is growing trend among people who are happy being single but who also yearn to be married, so they wed themselves.

37-year-old Erika Anderson considers herself a “sologamist.” She says sologamy is all about saying “yes” to oneself and not giving into the pressure society places on single people to pair up.

“It means that we are enough,” she tells WUSA-9 news, “even if we are not partnered with someone else.”

Last year, Anderson said was so sick of people always asking why she was still single. So she planned a wedding, spent a ton of money, invited all of her friends and family, and got married… to herself.

Afterwards, she took herself on a solo honeymoon to Mexico.

Believe it or not, there’s actually an industry for this sort of thing. “Marry Yourself” in Canada offers consulting and wedding photography for sologamists. There’s also IMarriedMe.com, which describes itself as “a self-wedding is a symbolic ceremony–about reconnecting and staying connected with you. Wear the ring to remind you every day to LOVE YOURSELF.”

IMarriedMe.com offers sologamy ceremony kits, including “self-wedding bands,” daily affirmation cards, and vows, as well as an “I Married Me Self-Wedding In-A-Box” kit that retails for $230.

The site was created by jewelry designer Jeffrey Levin, who tells WUSA-9, that he believe sologamy has “increased over the years, and it’s something that’s becoming more understood and more accepted.”

But not everyone agrees.

Amanda Prestigiacomo at The Daily Wire calls it “the saddest trend you’ve ever heard of” and Michael Arceneaux at The Root describes it as “some white nonsense, and y’all’s black selves better not duplicate their silliness.”

“You don’t need to marry yourself to prove you’re OK with being single,” Arceneaux writes. “Just masturbate and ignore the world. Tell people to mind their damn business. … There—I saved you on your future fake divorce settlement. You’re welcome.”
