In the wake of last Sunday’s mass shooting at an Orlando gay club, Uber has begun offering free rides to and from select locations of importance to the LGBT community in 40 cities.
Approved destinations include community centers and health clinics, but also bars and clubs, like the Ritz in New York and Nellie’s and Town Dance boutique in DC.
Rides are also being offered in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Toronto, New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles and many other cities through Monday night.
Last year, Uber put rainbow flags on its cars in Indianapolis during the NCAA Final Four, after Indiana governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act permitting discrimination against LGBT people on religious grounds.
The company has also been responsive when drivers harass or discriminate against LGBT passengers.
