OF ALL COLORS IN THE SPECTRUM, PINK IS PROBABLY THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL. FOR A LONG TIME IT WAS A COLOR EXCLUSIVELY FOR WOMEN, BUT OVER THE PAST YEARS THAT HAS CHANGED. NOW MEN CAN WEAR PINK AND FEEL COMPLETELY CONFORTABLE WITH IS. BECAUSE, AS MILEY CYRUS ONCE SAID: PINK ISN'T JUST A COLOR, IT'S AN ATTITUDE.
Pink might not be the most conventional color, but then again, Mateo Armandis also not the most conventional photographer. So when we asked him why he used pink as a color theme for his work with newby Sébastien Wally, we were not surprised when he simply stated that it is a color he likes. Leave it to Mateo to turn this color, that by definition is associated with girls, into a statement of masculinity.
Miley Cyrus once said that pink isn't just a color, it's an attitude. If someone knows about attitude it is Miley, so we happily follow her wisdom on the subject. Mateo Armand played around the idea for a pink theme for some time already, and though he is a firm believer that it is a theme that can work really well for male photography, he has been waiting for the right man to come along. Which eventually happened with Sébastien Wally.
Sébastien Wally is an engineer and his collaboration with Mateo Armand was a first time for him. Having never modeled before, he took the job as a real pro. Sébastien is originally from Réunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean. It's emerald forests, tumbling waterfalls, awesome mountainscapes, twisting roads, soul-stirring panoramas, energetic coastal cities and a sprinkling of white- or black-sand beaches combined with not just a very positive and happy but also beautiful people, makes the island probably one of the last paradises on earth. Réunion fascinating Creole, African, Indian, Chinese and French heritage are coming beautifully together in young Sébastien. He seems to be an ambassador for the beauty that Réunion represents.
As mentioned before, Mateo Armand wanted to do a pink series for some time and when laying his eyes upon Sébastien Wally he just knew the color scheme would fit perfectly with the color of his skin. Though at first not so comfortable being naked in front of the camera – and can you blame him, being at his first shoot ever – Sébastien soon threw all his reserves overboard and decided to go all the way. It is rare that we see full frontal coming from Mateo and also this time the portraits are discretely cropped, making the viewer simply yearn for more. Putting his skilled post-production talents to work, Mateo succeeded in creating a series of diverse photographs, all in pink tones. And Sébastien gave it just enough attitude to make this a set of masculine sensual images. –BM-
