Has there ever been a more embarrassing time to be a queer Republican? Look at what the humiliated Log Cabin Republicans have been reduced to: withholding their endorsement from Trump, despite him being what they call “perhaps the most pro-LGBT presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party.”
The sad truth is that they are probably correct, at least in that Trump is the least anti-LGBT. Mitt Romney had some miserable things to say about queer people; as did John McCain. George Bush tried to put a marriage ban in the US Constitution, and the less said about Bob Dole the better.
And yet the Log Cabin Republicans seemed to have no problem endorsing all of those candidates. How weird!
Trump, to his credit, has barely said anything about LGBT people, probably because he has no policies of any substance whatsoever on any topic. And on those rare occasions that he has deigned to talk about LGBTs, it’s been pretty bad: he opposes marriage equality, supports a bill that would let businesses turn away the gays, and said he’d rescind Obama’s orders that protect LGBTs from discrimination.
He’s also surrounded himself with some of the worst homophobes in the country.
When making the case that Donald is pro-LGBT, supporters point out that he’s allowed gay people to work for him and to buy his products, and that his foundation has given money to HIV charities. Really, this is the best you can do? It sounds like the absolute barest minimum one could expect — or maybe even less than the minimum, given that we now know Donald’s “foundation” is just a way for him to take credit for spending other people’s money.
Anyway, despite withholding their endorsement, the collaborators at the LCR still managed to lick his boots: “Should Mr. Trump become our nation’s next President, Log Cabin Republicans welcomes the opportunity to work with his administration to ensure the advances in LGBT freedom we have fought for and secured will continue.”
Oh, go to hell, LCR. You fought for your own subjugation and secured nothing but humiliation for yourselves.
