SXSW is home to many weird and wonderful premieres. But Seth Rogen’s new computer-animated comedy Sausage Party may just take the cake for weirdest and wonderful-est. The “work-in-progress” version of the film was screened last night to already-glowing reviews, some people comparing it to South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut in terms of its potential status as a legendary R-rated animated film. Those of us who weren’t there will just have to settle for the unbelievable trailer, above.
The film, which has been in the works for eight years, stars much of Rogen’s regular cast—Rogen himself, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride, etc.—and revolves around sentient food in the grocery store, most of which dreams about being “chosen.” Of course, being “chosen” means certain death at the hands of a human, but they don’t know that. Our news editor Jim Vorel is frighteningly reminded of the 2012 Charlie Sheen film Foodfight, but we’d expect that Sausage Party will be far, far better. It’s currently slated for an August theatrical release, but good luck waiting five more months to see this.
