After one of the most contentious elections in modern history, Republican candidate Donald Trump has been declared the winner of the 2016 presidential race.

After a long and anxious evening, the AP and The New York Times both called the election for Trump at around 2:30am ET when he took Wisconsin, after already winning in Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

The total electoral vote was 279 to 218, Trump over Clinton.

“Such a beautiful and important evening!” Trump said in a tweet this morning. “The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again. We will all come together as never before.”

The real estate magnate-turned-reality TV star campaigned on “making America great again” by building a wall at the Mexican border and deporting massive numbers of immigrants.

Conservatives, though, see a chance to seed the Supreme Court and undo many of the advances of the Obama administration, including marriage equality.

“This is a crucial moment for our nation and for the LGBTQ movement,” said HRC president Chad Griffin in a statement. “The election of a man who stands opposed to our most fundamental values has left us all stunned. There will be time to analyze the results of this election, but we cannot afford to dwell. We must meet these challenges head on.”

“Over the last 18 months, Donald Trump and Mike Pence have intentionally sowed fear and division for cynical political purposes,” he added. “They now face a decision about whether they will also govern that way. We hope, for the sake of our nation and our diverse community — which includes women, people of color, those with disabilities, immigrants, and people of all faiths and traditions — they will choose a different path.
